garden House Plants Name That Plant!

Help identifying plant

This plant was in my backyard when I moved into my new house. I've just repotted it and brought it inside as I think it looks quite pretty. However, I don't know what kind of plant this is or how to care for it. Could anybody help me identify it?

It looks like an alocasia (not sure about spelling) to me. My mom grows these in her outdoor gardens...they are usually sold for that, but people do grow them indoors. There are a lot of different types, but they are highly toxic and can be dangerous if you have pets and small children.

Realistically, you have two choices with a well grown invasive plant like this bittersweet. One is to cut to the ground all vines and on the fresh cuts paint a brush killer. Yes, it uses herbicide, but in smaller, very targeted use. This might take one repetition, but I haven’t had times when even a well established invasive takes more than one repetition. Otherwise, cut all the stems, and as soon as it resprouts, remove them before they are fully leafed out, and then repeat for the next two or more growing seasons every week or so. The goal here is to prevent it ever regrowing enough leaves to create energy so that the plant uses up all its reserves and is unable to replace them. With bittersweet, new stems won’t just grow from the main stem area, but will sprout from roots as well. If you let it establish leaves, it will start replacing the energy it used up trying to regrow, so this will take persistence and consistency. When a plant is really large and inter-grown with other plants like this, you won’t be able to remove all the roots with anything less than a tractor or bulldozer.

I concur, that's a croton. They are used for outdoor landscaping all over Hawaii. Very hearty and doesn't get a lot of pests outdoors. It LOVES bright light. Good luck to you. :)

why did you bring it inside ???

is that its permanent site??? .. where is light going to come from???

was it outside in full shade or sun??? ...

LA is just initials from my name, I live in Lisbon, Portugal.
I brought it inside just to see if it can do well since I like how it looks. It was outside under a tree, so it was only in full sunlight for no more than a couple hours a day.
It was in an old pot and nearly dead, had no leaves on it and somehow survived. So even though I don't know what kind of plant it is I'm thinking it's very sturdy and should hopefully be OK inside in a hallway that doesn't get too much light? I might be wrong.
Do you know what kind of plant it is?

Hey,

I also may be wrong but most of the images google brings up are of the flowers as well as there being many different varieties so some of them will look different to yours.

All of these below are Calla Lily leaves so you can see why I thought that :)

If this plant was established outdoors in the OP’s garden in Lisbon it is much more likely to be Zantedeschia aethiopica, Calla, than Alocasia. I maybe wrong but I don’t believe the latter would survive the winter there. I‘ve never seen Zantedeschia aethiopica succeed as a houseplant.

I should have been a bit more specific with species haha, google can be a minefield!

As floral suggests, that looks to be the one. I don’t know much on these if I’m honest but agree with the above that this type thrive best outdoors.

Hopefully now you have the ID it will help you determine what’s best for your plant :)

It does seem that they prefer full sun to partial shade... I might try to keep it indoors for a bit to see how it does... I really like it in this spot, especially now that I know it will (hopefully) have beautiful flowers!

I think it’s very unlikely to flower indoors. Or even grow well at all. I’d really recommend putting it back outside and getting yourself a proven houseplant species.
