Porcelain slabs for bathtub walls

Hello! I‘m having a complete

bathroom remodel and I would like to use 31.5“ x 63” porcelain slabs for the walls (two horizontally on the middle part and one on opposite ends of the bathtub wall) and large porcelain tiles to fill up the remaining spaces. I’m trying to minimize the grout so I’m going for the slabs to make it easier to clean. My contractor claims that these slabs won’t fit my door. I don’t understand why not. I understand that he may need to cut about 3 inches from the width. I feel like there is enough clearance to get these slabs in there. He said that he will need to cut these in half but these are specifically for bathtub walls. Why would he still need to cut except to trim 3 inches off? Please advise. i need to decide soon. I have a standard size bathroom with the vanity outside the bathroom. attached are the pictures If the slabs and my current bathroom. This is my first time to post and hope I can get some advice. well if you don't understand why not, and you're there with him, how are we supposed to understand? lol

all you're telling us is that "he says it won't fit the door" and you don't understand why.

Why don't you ask him for a better explanation of why they won't fit, and then come back w/that info? is it because the door to the room sits in the hallway and he can't make the turn while holding the slab? is it because once it's in the door they wouldn't be able to turn it and place it on the wall?

you have a very small bathroom. are you keeping the tub?

why not just use 30x30 porcelain tiles instead of the large slabs? the larger tiles will leave you w/very little grout lines and will prob be cheaper to do.

Big tiles like that are super expensive. As much as quartz on the walls would be, by the time you use the certified and trained installers. They are not at all suited for tiny little bathrooms. The scale is all wrong, and they are completely unforgiving. They will crack. Get the plastic walls. They bend.

That alcove is designed to house a tub only, not a tub shower unit. You can't "repurpose" what's there without water damage to your floor, window, and behind your walls. The tub itself not designed to be used that way, and neither is the window designed to be in a wet area. You'd need to rip it all out and start over by installing a smaller and waterproof window, then installing a tub that had an integral tile flange which is part of the waterproofing system needed. Then your waterproofing membrane and whatever wall cladding you might want.

Hi all, now that cabs and tile are on order, I'm trying to narrow down countertop and undermount tub deck choices. I have been planning a speckled quartz all along, but I'm concerned I'm tilting too modern. I've seen some nice stone mimics in porcelain slabs that I'd like to consider. Has anyone had any experience using porcelain slabs for seamless/grout less counters or tub decks? I've seen them on walls in photos, but less so on horizontal surfaces. I'm wondering if there are issues with cracking? I know there are Quartz marble-lookalikes too, but I thought this stone look below was beautiful, at least in the photo. I don't want to bother going to view it and other similars if I can't use them! The slabs come in a 10' x 5' size, which would work for me. Thanks!

I renovated the bathroom in my condo last year, which included replacing the tub. The enamel on the old tub (installed in the 1970s) was very scratched. The new one is a a Bootz porcelain on steel tub. It's only been about 15 months since the renovation was completed but I have no problems so far. The non-slip bottom is not difficult to keep clean. I use Barkeeper's Friend cleaner (easily available in stores and not expensive) per the manufacturer's instructions. I went with porcelain on steel because I live on the second floor of an apartment building, and since the old one was not cast iron I didn't know if the weight of a new cast iron tub would be a problem. I went with Bootz on the recommendation of my contractor, who has installed a bunch of them with no complaints. A neighbor refinished their tub a few years back and the fumes were terrible.

There are no technical reasons large format tile cannot be used in this application.

Search for a contractor who has lots of experience with porcelain slabs. This one certainly does not have that experience.
