We had IKEA build and install our cabinets. Yeah, everyone says the price comparison has to include the DIY discount, but I didn't find it that expensive, considering that the two men were incredibly efficient. Our contractor (we also had demolition, flooring, painting, a powder room, electrical work done) quoted the same price as IKEA for installation with assembly extra (included with IKEA price), and considering that he's never done one, there had to be a learning curve involved. We chose Torhamm cabinets, the most expensive line, and cabinets were $7000, and assembly/installation was $2500. Lots of cabinets, all the bells and whistles. I'd do it again in an instant. Oh, and all the cabinets are exactly the same, only difference is door and drawer fronts.

I have a good friend, who I will add is the most detailed, meticulous, pickiest person I have ever known, did Ikea cabinets in their new build about three years ago. She had an architect & of course builder/contractor involved in the build too, but the Ikea kitchen & cabinets are wonderful as was the install. Many trips to Ikea with her plans & dimensions occurred, I was with her for some of them. I think that were we to replace our cabinets, I would do Ikea with no hesitation. She also used their cabinets in bathrooms & utility/sewing room.

There are some talented people that participate on that forum. I'd post my kitchen plans too and see if they can spot some opportunities for improvements (wish I did even though I love my kitchen it could definitely be better).

PS, we have all drawers, which adds to the cost. But worth every penny.

If anyone remembers the early days of HGTV and their home improvement shows many used IKEA cabinets and bookcases in the remodeling. I had thought they were using box stores until the day I had gone to IKEA then saw the exact same cabinet that evening on a show. Love it or List it often used them.

We remodeled our kitchen in 2018 and used Ikea cabinets. They look beautiful and I would absolutely make the same choice again.

If I could do mine again I would do the same thing I did last time. All drawers. Big ones for pots. Only a few upper cabinets. Having drawers is so much easier especially as we get older. Definitely check out the kitchen forum. Get one of those talented people to help you design your layouts. Like mama goose! Good luck!

Anyone have experience with sofas and chairs from Ikea?

I have a leather sofa that I got from IKEA about 15 years ago. Admittedly not heavily used, but it's in like-new condition.

IKEA was around in Europe for quite a while before it came to the USA. My siblings and other family use their products throughout.

However, frugal as they are, they built them and for the most part, they installed them.

Almost all the furniture in my Brothers condo is IKEA. It seems to hold up fine.

A few years ago my daughter ordered all new cabinets through LOWES. She had the garage full of them, when we (me and the ex) arrived.

We hung all the cabinets and installed all the lower... she layed porcelain time also with our help (dad got to cut, I got to be the gofer).

She was mighty proud of the set up, the look overall, the feeling of DYI made her glow.

However, a couple years after she got married, they looked for a bigger house, and she still laments that her kitchen was better.

Seniorgal, I have the wingback chair and footstool from Ikea, bought it to replace the Lane wingback that was lost in the Harvey flood. I don't use the chair all that often but I like it, the back slopes back just enough to make it nice for reading.

Off topic, but does anyone remember Stor? I remember driving way out of the way and getting some great folding chairs for one of my first apartments after college.

Kath...you might check into RTA cabinets. Stands for, Ready To Assemble. I use those for remodels. They're plywood boxes, not particle board. They're REAL wood. Soft close drawers AND cabinets. They're shipped flat...and the buyer assembles them. Made in China, keeps the cost down. They have sales online or I have a supplier in Denver. The Denver supplier will assemble them for you at an additional cost. Then just hire someone to install them. Nutmeg Twist, In My remodel. I'm sure you have a local supplier as well.
