How women dressed for the office in the 1940s. (Photo by my dad.)

That office photo gives such a glimpse into their lives. A vault, the slogan "we will never give up" on the wall and ashtrays on the desk. Was there a celebration with beverages? Or were they just thirsty? I noticed that the hemlines are just below the knee on all. What is with that cloth being laid out on the right? Are they serving a meal? Are those corsages on two of the ladies or Christmas pins?

I took a look at the original large file. The woman in the center is wearing a corsage, but the one on the left is not. I'm not sure what it is--a large brooch maybe. My dad worked for an oil company, and they had a lot of parties. This looks like one of them, but I don't think it was a Christmas party because they always decorated the room for those, and the women dressed up a little more.

The woman on the left is the only one not physically connected to the others.

My dad's office party pictures demonstrate how different things were then. They're really a social commentary. I find them fascinating.

Second from the left? She's the partyer. Had on hip, arm draped over the other gal's shoulder.

The center lady with the corsage looks un-comfortable. Quite serious looking.

4th from the left is the gal everyone likes. She is connected to two others and she looks comfortable and has a genuine smile.

These office type photos are fascinating.

Maybe we should have a workplace theme for Yours/Mine. The older the photo the better.

Elizabeth, you look at these old photos the same way I do--and I agree with your assessment of the women. It looks like they might be drinking whiskey neat because there's so little in the glass, but they always had mixers set up along with the liquor and beer for these parties. I think this might have been taken near the end of the party, although if that's the case, the white cloth is being taken up, not laid down. Hard to say. The ashtray has been used, but that could have happened any time.

We did meet in person a few times. I took this photo of myself using a tripod and the timer setting on my camera, which is why my pose is a bit odd.
