I have a friend with a house that was decorated by the AD100 designer Jan Showers (so it's not contemporary but not really traditional either). Anyway, all of the doors in her house were painted this really stunning kind of smoky quartz color. Hard to describe and sounds weird, but it was like a shade of brown that wasn't trying to look like wood. The color palette in her house was a lot of pastels, but the doors looked amazing! I would think black is too harsh, but I think painting them all a color other than white is a great idea. Have you considered doing a dark grey instead of black for the windows as well? Sherwin Williams has this color called Black Fox that is extremely popular with designers. It's a softer blackish color. I have even considered painting them in my house purely because doors get so easily banged up and dingy looking. Only reason I haven't is cost. I do think if you're going to do it, though, the key is to do it throughout the house.

We like Schlage, and they have a nice matte black finish, as well as quite a few knob styles, which you can mix and match with their rosette styles to create a look like you show.

@Woody Vaughan or Shaun Fogarty the grain is absolutely beautiful. So stain seems like the way to go. I've been able to get everything except the tiny crevices totally stripped of shellac. But the little details around the panels are maybe 1/16 of an inch and I just can't quite get it all out. Do you think staining over the shellac in those areas is a horrible idea or will it just look darker/deeper?

If all the other interior doors are going to be the off black color, then the closet doors and bathroom doors should all be the same.
