Should I put in a light with the ceiling fan?
Comments (24)I vote no on the hanging down light kit. Extends too far into the living space, the light is too close and too glary as it is either bare bulbs or glass shades. It looks declasse' in my opinion (sorry light kit lovers.) I agree about lights above the ceiling fan, the strobe effect. It is hypnotic and unpleasant. The only one with a light that I'd consider was at Home Depot and it had a cute little 18th-century type chandelier hanging down from it,as ceiling fans with lights go it was pretty nice. Just scoured their site and don't see the exact one, but this is sort of like it. They also have one that's very woodsy with faux antlers and a "stump" as the top shaft. I won't have ceiling fans in the house period. I hate them and find here in Dallas that they simply are not missed or needed. As I've said before, why would I want a small appliance hanging down from the middle of my ceiling? It's only about the next best decorating element to a window air conditioner. DH insisted on having the fans in his work and exercise space upstairs and they are hardly ever on. Comments (7)The Aug 2016 issue of This Old House has an article titled: All About Ceiling Fans. 1'6" min distance from wall or sloped ceiling. 7'-10' minimum distance from floor. Steer clear of (existing) lights, rotating blades below a light may create a flickering effect. Occupied space (in sq ft) / 4 = blade span in inches, wider if ceilings are high. DC motors save up to 70% on electricity. Higher cfm fans provide a better breeze, usually have more robust motors that will last longer and run quieter....See MoreChandelier or ceiling fan in Master with High Ceiling? Any regrets??
Comments (11)chandy would look beautiful. Do you use a fan? Because unless it's going to be directly over your bed, you really won't get the benefit from it. When it's hot, are you going to hang out in your bedroom?? prob not. I keep mine on over the bed all the time because I'm old and get hot during the nights. even in winter. (yeah, it's great.) But you're prob young and may not need that, yet. (just wait!)...See MoreHigh ceiling lighting dilemma! Separate fan and lights? Other options?
Comments (9)If there is anywhere to use recessed lighting it would be your kitchen. Also add under cabinet LED's. Once those are done, you may find the addition of 3 pendants here a bit of overkill. As for the ceiling fan, is it needed in warm weather? Fan lights rarely serve as room illumination except for getting in when its totally dark. They are completely inadequate for anything else. Looks like you're sampling some paint colors by the stairs. Don't go for the paint until the lighting is completed so you get true colors. If you key paint to current lighting you'll be disappointed with it when the upgraded lights go in. I think a pair of chandeliers for each of your dining areas will be a big help. Some uplights under plants flanking the TV could be a nice touch. You may want to consider unloading the mantel of its clutter and having sconces installed on that wall. The windows seem awfully low, so a "fool-the-eye" window treatment that uses shades and panels to visually extend the window onto the wall above it will be a big improvement to your overall look. Here's a chart to help with TV/sofa placement. and a chart for picking a rug, which you should consider to anchor the sofa and seating group....See MoreLove stone homes
