Air cleaning house plants and cheap decorative planters in stock?

Due to all the smoke were going to increase our number of air purifying house plants. We snagged 3 Dracaena Marginatas at our local Lowes but they didn't have any of the other varieties that I normally get. So instead we are going to divide some of our snake plants and maybe Peace Lilies.

But finding some decorative lightweight pots seems to be a problem. Anyone seen any instock at a local store that look like one of these two in at least a 12" size. I know I won't find exact but maybe someone has seen a place with a good selection of inexpensive plastic pots that have a nice look.

This time of year is a bit tough for planters because it's late in the season. I'm not sure what they have left this time of year, but I usually get a lot of nice pots for a good price at the At Home store in Broomfield. The HomeGoods store near you may have some as well.

Houseplants are wonderful and I love them (believe you me, I have an indoor jungle) but I have read that they really don't do much to actually purify the air. But I still think they are a great addition to the home and especially for people who just love plants!

Hi freedee: We also love Tremontano, but they only take cash!! We are debit card people for food items, so that store is a problem. Have you ever tried getting cash on the island? Not a good idea! They do make nice sandwiches, though. We also LOVE Oakies Meat Market in Surf City for great steaks and burgers, but get there early as it gets very crowded. Last summer we tried Taste of Italy in SC and liked their cold cuts and salads alot. gail618: I got those prices quoted from a local locksmith in the shore area. I got quotes from 3 different local locksmits and they were all in the same price range. I think the programmable lock was a Schlage (sp?). One of the locksmits told me he has it on his house and loves it. Interestingly, I asked him what people who strictly rent out their houses do about the key problem. He told me he is actually on retainer with several homeowners to go every week/weeks/month during the summer and change the pins on all of the door locks to insure past renters no longer have working keys to the houses!!! I can only imagine how that cost must add up! The locksmith told me that you have a master program (say 1234) and they you add a temporary bypass code to allow the renter or guest into the house (say 2233). After 2 weeks (or whatever you program into the lock), the code reverts back to the master code (1234). He said there are even locks you can reprogram from your cell phone without being there in person. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Details Details Details and finishes. I think well thought out lighting makes a huge difference. Go into a very swanky expensive bar and look at how well the lighting was designed - with the accents and thought to what is being highlighted. I can tell a cheap house by the lighting. Also flooring makes a big difference. Keep a photo scrapbook of things you like and get them included. When you stay in nice hotels pick out little things that make it nice (wall switched right by the bedside etc.). Make small rooms like guest baths have big impact (small spaces are cheaper to do luxury details to). I would rather live in a 3K sqft home that is finished to a very high level and designed perfectly than live in a 9k sqft home that is a "big box". Speaking of boxes - a box is the least expensive way to construct anything. Homes that break this mold are usually more expensive in general. A great builder is so obsessed with details he drives his people to produce the best product they can (and speaks that he has a great relationship to get those results).

Some really great ideas here. A few I use- For air layering, I often pin sections of plants into the substrate with paperclip halves, nice U shape, and in a few weeks or so there are enough roots to cut the stem for an already rooted cutting. For training vining plants on a trellis, cheap hair clips work beautifully. For pots with huge drain holes, I cover with a bit of old window screen to keep the soil from washing out. Clear plastic cups with drainage holes punched in the bottom are great for rooting cuttings. Cheap, and you can tell at a glance how the root system is progressing. Ziplock bags are great for rooting many types of cuttings, and make emergency humidity tents for that one plant you forgot to water on the hot windowsill... whoops. I used to have an issue with knocking over small pots on windowsills when they git dry, or top heavy pots with bamboo u hoops. (I grow mostly Hoyas), then I started putting a few rocks in each pot to weigh them down. Just be sure it doesnt impact water retention too much. Havent knocked over a pot since. That is all I can think of for now.

Thanks for mentioning the At Home store. My husband mused that they might have some but I hadn't remembered seeing them when we were there and since they don't sell plants I wasn't sure they sold them. I may call over to see if they still have some. The season will probably be a problem because most stores are clearing garden stuff to get ready for holiday stuff.

I've also read they don't purify much but those studies were in comparison to airing out your house with fresh air. With no fresh air to exchange into the house I'm taking whatever we can get.

If you stumble across any on clearance let me know even if it is weeks from now.

You can get some idea of what the At Home store may still have in stock on their website. They were offering buy online - curbside pickup a while back so their website actually showed their inventory. They had a lot more in the store than they showed online but you can still get some idea from the website.
