Wife's Biology Experiment - Germinations in different mixes
Comments (3)californian you are missing the point of the experiment.. which is to germinate (or not) seeds from the get-go in a pre-mixed soil medium. The experiment shows strong fertilizers in the soil are not conducive to germination. It's a multi-tiered experiment that also is looking at the growth patterns for what does germinate. We're not trying to show the effect of fertilizer AFTER the seeds are germinated, but the effect BEFORE the seeds germinate and then closely watch the results. The fish fertilizer is 5-1-1 and nothing has germinated to date. Instead we got all that mold growth. The other aspect of this experiment is for observation notation in the project. I know what you are saying, but that's not the premise for this particular experiment. We could try reducing the amount of fish fertilizer and 10-10-10 used to see what amount allows germination and then note what kind of growth we see....See MoreHelp.. Comments (6)Marleah - I also grow all 3 and they are distinct: 1. Crocus Rose is not yellow, it is apricot/buff fading to cream. Like Carrie Jo says, it starts out tight and opens flat, sometimes with a green pointel. It always blooms in clusters. Foliage is small and glossy. Growth upright, never needs staking. 2. Charlotte is medium yellow, very cupped and much more double than Graham Thomas - you never see the stamens on Charlotte. Also, the blooms last much longer on the bush than GT, which in my experience shatter (too) quickly. Growth upright, sometimes long blind shoots which need to be cut back. 3. Teasing Georgia is lighter yellow, fading to cream on the outer petals. Blooms very double and open very flat. Never doesn't need support! Hope this helps! Comments (119)My boyfriend and I were with the 250,000 in NYC. We came from his house in Brooklyn, and the subway was jam-packed. Got off at Grand Central Station onto a very crowded 42nd Street and got swept into the crowd up 5th Avenue. 10 blocks away from Trump Tower it was impossible to move even on 6th and Madison Avenues & crowds spilled over onto Park as well – the entire mid-town of Manhattan was taken over. There were men and women of all ages, colors, languages and persuasions and everyone was polite, helpful and respectful. I didn’t see any anti-protests. When we had dinner on 2nd Avenue I was shocked to see on TV the lying press conference by Sean Spicer. It was so much like the dictatorships in 3rd-world countries when he said this was the biggest inaugural celebration in history, period, and that's how it must be reported. Wow. Comments (8)I'm not up on the current specs, but a large part of why I hunted down the Perlick was reading up on them at the time -- variable speed compressor, much higher BTU compressor (more chill power, faster recovery), solid build and all of this with the (then) only energy star rating for under counter units. The higher BTU was a big deal for us. Most undercounter units seemed to be designed for chilling beverages for home entertaining or possibly produce -- things that didn't have regular and heavy use. We planned on having milk and juice as welll as other beverages and snacks for everyday meals and in between -- so probably getting opened more than the larger fridge. And I didn't want my milk spoiling faster because of it. Perlick started as a commercial unit for high use -- bars, restaurants anad sports venues. They were up to the task. I talked to the folks at the dealer about all of this and why I was determiined to track one down, then ordered it. After we got ours, the dealer, who was listening, had an unhappy customer with a stadium sky box -- the fridge drawers couldn't maintain the chill with the frequent opening and people were getting warm drinks. They pulled the unit and installed a Perlick. I rarely hear mine running, and then it is a quiet hum when the room is quiet, llike late at night when everyone else is in bed. When first delivered, the fan was a bit loose and we heard that. Once they tightened it, no more issue. Have you had a freezer drawer? Like a bottom freezer that pulls out? Some folks don't like the organization facor and having to lift up/dig down. Height and size could be a facrtor too, depending on what you typically freeze. Leftovers or stock items in regular sized containers would be great and easy to deal with, but bulkier items (thinking of the pork shoulder I had or ribs when we buy Costco packs and cook half/freeze half) or irregularly shaped things might not. The lack of an ice maker would be a deal killer for me. The drawers are not going to handle trays as well as a shelf in a standing freezer -- and we're in Texas. We use ice year round and have friends who have gone to installing a separate ice maker. Entertaining would be a real pain. Do think through all your uses. You sound like you are comfortable with unconventional approaches. DO make sure they really work for all your needs. Think through all the uses -- daily, occasional, entertaining and seasonal variations. I also think it would be wise to plan alternative space use. We knew that our fridge drawers could be 24 inch cabinet drawers -- easy enough. We put in a second DW -- again, 24" can be another cabinet, or a beverage/wine fridge. etc. Our micro drawer was new and a bit untested -- if it didn't work out, we could put a small shelf unit in the space. We are very happy with our choices, but if our needs change or we should sell, there are some options for the future. Look at your plans from that perspective too. 3 years agoIn my garden, Charlotte seems to get blackspot and powdery mildew often even though I spray it weekly with neem oil. I live in Seattle zone 8B. Charlotte seems to be upright and Poet’s Wife seems to grow freely. Poet’s Wife tends to bloom more than Charlotte and I love its lovely scent. Poet’s Wife bloom is bigger as well.

3 years agoSuzanne , here’s a pic . And since they are in pots , I guess I would subtract at least 24 inches to account for the roots so then they are about 5 ft tall in the pot. However I’m in California so who knows what it plans on doing ! 😂
