I think of plumber Jimmy *every time* I sweep up the kitty litter. The inlet pipe is not high enough for my brush to fit under easily. It made no difference to him how high on the wall he put the pipe, but it makes a tremendous difference to me! Grrrrr!

In my next house, or if any of you are building or remodeling, make sure you tell your plumber to put the inlet pipe high enough for cleaning tools to get underneath.

When we added a "leisure" room to the back of the house, I wanted it to include an extra sleeping spot for an extra guest if needed. We hunted everywhere for just the right small sofa bed. Finally chose this and I have hated it since the day it moved in 17 years ago. It just doesn't 'fit' with everything else in the whole house, let alone that room. I guess that the rest of my decor is trapped in the 1960's.

I like the deep window sill but it makes it difficult to open. There isn't room to get my fingers under the lift bar yet if I lean froward to raise it from where the sash locks are it hits me at the wrong angle. I either need to be taller or start lifting weights. I don't have this issue with any of the other windows in the house.

Double sink vanity in my bathroom in Cathedral City. I would like to replace it but am living with it for now. I did replace the faucets and the drawer and door pulls, plus the hinges.Thermometer, when it reaches 118°.

Main level powder room. The original room was a full bath, with a tub & shower where this vanity now sits. Love the storage the larger vanity provides. Hate the dark countertop. It shows every water spot, and casts a gray shadow on the ceiling. Can you believe the ceiling is white, the walls are light blue, and the beadboard under the ledge is white? Someday I'll get around to doing something about it.

Ok...so as you'd expect, I have before and after photos of things I didn't like....

Before: The plumber missed putting the pipe in the wall, it sticks out of the floor. So...of course...build a square box over the pipe and put a pedestal sink on top of the box. Now the sink is 4" too high. The plain "slab" mirror was glued to the wall, with no back splash, "asorbed" water ruining the bottom half, desilvering the mirror.

This switch controls half of an outlet about 12 feet away. When we moved in every room had one of these!

A pedestal sink on top of a box? What the heck?

I said I’d never have a home built on a slab but changed my mind when our current home came on the market in 2004. We’d looked at buying it 15 years earlier but couldn’t afford it at that time. The sellers had recently installed 3/4” engineered wood flooring that looked nice but there was a transition strip at every opening - to a hallway, a bedroom, kitchen, living room, etc. We considered replacing it but the floors were glued down, it would be a big mess and pretty darn expensive. So we live with.

When we moved into our house several bedrooms had a wall switch for the ceiling light installed upside down. I was told this was common in children's bedrooms. Why? So they would be confused about wall switches wherever they went?

Lars..... to me your vanity looks nice. What don't you like about it?

Jim those switches are crazy! My dad's retirement community has lots of those as a 'feature.' You can have lamps on the switched outlet half, and have your tv or whatever plugged into the 'always on' outlet half. But do they label which half is which, or which switch goes to what outlet? No. Crazy!

I do like my vanity better after I changed the hardware and light fixture. Here's how it looked before (realtor's photo):It had black (oil rubbed bronze) hardware and faucets. I replaced the bathtub with a walk-in shower - I never took a bath in there. I do like that the vanity has a lot of storage, but most of it is empty at this point. It's nice to have empty storage for change, however.

We changed everything in my brother's bathroom except for the toilet and the floor. There was a bathtub in his bathroom originally also.

I hate how shabby this looks. An arbor has since rotted despite upkeep. Actually twice. We replace two times!

I would love to get a composite gate. I’ve given up on the arbor.

In the meantime, DH is thinking of capping the posts, moving up the gate and painting.

I don't hate these blinds (all the windows have blinds when I rented the apartment). I hate the handles in the middle that I have to drag them open or closed. They're a pia unless they're perfectly aligned. I'd rather have the mechanism at the side that you pull the rope thing.

They also catch on the heater, then they don't close all the way until I free them.

Jim, I put a switch like that in one spot in our house. It’s next to a window where we put our Christmas tree, so all we have to do is plug in the power strip and turn on the light switch. No more reaching behind the tree knocking off ornaments in the process, to turn on the lights. We had a huge live tree and then a huge artificial tree. We have since downsized our tree and it isn’t as much of an issue now but I still enjoy the convenience.

This has always bugged me. When we had new tile put in our master bathroom, for some reason the guys doing the work removed a long piece of wood moulding and then pieced it with MDF, resulting in this poor job. When I found it, they wouldn’t confess to what happened, but I suspect they damaged the wood so badly they had to do something. I complained and they tried to sand it but it never looked the same as a long continuous piece.

Arcy - are they still alive? When we had our HVAC and water heater serviced the tech found a dead bat inside one of the pipes that vent through the chase in the chimney. Apparently we needed a new chimney cap and since then- no more bats.

^Doesn't your chimney have a screen at the top? My parents' chimney did not, but then they never used their fireplace. Bees built hives in their chimney, and the bees would sometimes wander into the house. They eventually put a screen on it, once the bees had been removed. I think they lit a fire to smoke them out, but then honey started dripping down.

How to choose? So many things in this house that annoy me. However, the clear winner is my porcelain tile kitchen floor. I hate it. It is too hard and makes my legs tired, plus anything I drop smashes to smithereens. All of my knives have no tips. Some tiles have cracked. The grout line is much too wide and gets filthy. Hate this floor!

Yes they were alive. 21 of them! Yes our chimney has a cap and an added small hole grate over all the caps. The brick is old chicago brick and it is failing. DH mortared up some cracks and a missing brick. We replaces the glass doors and he mortared them in too. WE had no idea there were bats living somewhere between the brick and the three flues that are in the brick chimney. Bats do not need much of a space to get in...but who knew!!!
