Vanilla Strawberry has issues
Comments (5)Hmm, they should turn pink. I would monitor the blooms to see if the tan parts progress to pink, green or what. I would be upset if they go from white to brown or tan to brown, both of which would mean that they dried out early. Typically, not enough sun, too much heat/sun and lack of water (too much water) can cause color changes or can cause extended color changes (so the color lasts an unusually long time). I saw some Incrediballs (H. arborescens) go from white to sandy color to pink-green at a local plant nursery. Obviously, those were not established like your 4-year old plant. Comments (90)Stunning! Wow, what an improvement from your first photos. I see you’ve redone the stairs also. So beautiful. And I’ll bet those neighbors appreciate the beauty as well 😜 although it looks like they planted something on their side of the fence as well. It seems you inspired them. We have quite a few lookie-loos here in our neighborhood, so I would actually like it if the VS could grow to partially cover that front window. I do plan on keeping up with pruning so they don’t become beautiful beasts. However, I am mentally prepared to have to adjust the placement of these plantings in the future if needed. Based on the photos in this thread it seems like they could begin to bully the Bobos once they take off. Here is a photo of the other side of the house as well, for symmetry’s sake. Excuse the messy mulch. I was moving the grasses around....See MorePruning Vanilla Strawberry (paniculata)
Comments (8)Thank you, luis, for the advice. Yes, I probably should have planted Strawberry Sundae instead, but I didn't and I just don't have the heart to spade a perfectly healthy bush--plus digging up the roots sounds like quite the challenge! Besides, I confess, I rather like my "monster"--she is a big beauty, indeed! I will mull over the options you gave me. I'm thinking the general haircut might be workable. Like Hyed said, she can get floppy with those big blooms. But the 3 year idea might be workable also. But if something doesn't work soon, I may just decide I want a Vanilla Strawberry "tree" -- like hyed's. It's always good to have options in reserve, isn't it. : ) Thanks for the prompt responses. Anyone have pics of how your Vanilla Strawberry is coming along? Kate...See MoreBerry White VS Vanilla Strawberry VS Strawberry Sundae
Comments (6)I have a Strawberry Sundae that was beautiful all summer. My wife clipped and dried a lot of flowers just before the frost destroyed them. They started white and slowly faded pink. I trim mine slightly to keep the branches in the right direction, no trifucations or crossing. I'm going for that vintage paniculata look: not a tree, not a shrub, but in the middle with multiple trunks. Consequently, I have a few cuttings that will hopefully take (and from my Bobo). Very nice variety for a smaller space....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
