72" light bar over vanity mirror

i have a new 6' vanity with a full mirror that runs the length. i would like to find (or build) a bar light fixture that goes the 72" across the top. something like this or this but, again, exactly 72".

is this something that i can build myself or have an experienced electrician put together?

i guess additionally, most vanity lights i see are connected to he wall above and/or at the sides of the mirror. would it work to have a hanging light above the vanity? something like this?

I just have to know why you would want it to run end to end?

Yes you could hang a light down, but be advised it could create shadows.

Running a light end to end would be sooo bright...

hi! i just thought that it would look nicer and allow full light anywhere along the 6 foot vanity. i will definitely be putting a dimmer on it as i do most lights in the house to adjust. the lights that i identified were capable of about 3000 lumens. is that just overkill for vanity lighting?

Jeannie, it depends on both the look you want as well as the light you need. There's no rigid rule for the "right" side light bar, but probably 30" to 36" centered over the 48" vanity would look good. But it may also depend on the fixture you pick: how many lights does it have, how much light do they put out, and what kind of material is the light shade? For example, you could have a 36" fixture with three 40 watt lights and heavily frosted glass that would put out much less light than a smaller 24" fixture with three 65 watt halogen lights and clear or slightly frosted glass. You also need to see if the lights direct much of the light up, down or out. For example, a fixture with its lights pointed up could be fine for providing soft illumination bouncing off the ceiling to light the room, but not provide much task light for your activities at the vanity; a fixture with its lights directed down could provide excellent lighting for the vanity, but leave the overall room feeling a little dark. It's best if you can see fixtures in a couple lighting showrooms, because these factors are often hard to judge looking at pictures in a catalog or web site. Even if a showroom doesn't have the exact fixture you want, if you see others by the same manufacturer it can help you gauge what you feel will work best for you. -- Eric

Thank you for your help! That's a good thought! Unfortunately, we've already primed the new drywall and have a single light electrical set up, so I think I'm stuck with a single mirror now based on the lighting. There also wouldn't be room for sconces on either side of the mirrors since the frames would be right next to the shower wall/bedroom wall if we had 2 so it wouldn't look as nice as yours!

Many people choose vanity lights that are about 75 percent the width of the mirror and center the light above the mirror. You can also choose to use a bath bar light that is exactly as wide as the mirror. Hi cal21871, You can do either two wall sconces on each side or a single large top bar lighting. it depends on what else you have this bathroom. this is the vanity. again, the concept is to put a slim bar light above the length of the 6' mirror.

the whole space is 175" x 131". the reflected shower and unused laundry closet will be ripped out opening up the room entirely. ceilings are 10'.

could i not use led strip lights with an appropriate aluminum housing to produce a particular lumen output? what lumen output should i be shooting for?
