Help with 3 disease/insect/health issues
Comments (9)Tammy, Those photos of 'Wedding Cake' indicate a heavy infestation of rose scales (in my view, among the most loathsome of all insects). The only thing that would keep me from trashing that plant immediately, would be the knowledge that it was so rare that I'd never be able to replace it. 'Wedding Cake' was in the middle of your pot ghetto? Carefully examine all other denizens of your ghetto. Soon. As for 'Bow Bells' -- return that one to a shaded location pronto. In answer to your question regarding whether you should fertilize that one now: NO. As for those insects . . . I think you may be right in assuming that they're some kind of beetle. They look kind of like Fuller rose beetles (are they more dark gray-ish than black?). If they are Fuller beetles, they'll eat the leaves in short order, but probably not do any lasting damage to the plant. Rather than spraying those critters (whatever they may be) and waiting to see what the morning brings, pinching that leaf off and quickly dispatching it (and them) underfoot is the way to go. Better yet, use your thumb and its 2 adjacent fingers to turn those suckers into a fine puree. I once was very squeamish about bug juice, but no more. Soap and water at the end of a gardening session is almost as satisfying and restorative as a subtle mix of gin and vermouth is at cocktail time....See MoreWhat's on this hoya and how do I fix it?

Comments (1)spongy is bad... sounds like fungus. How were you watering this palm? Any watering of the crown/bud area where the new leaves come out? That is sometimes a problem for kentias. If soil was very well draining, this would be a hard palm to over water... though it is not that easy to underwater, either (pretty tolerant palms, normally). I would at least treat the bud with antifungal.. try pulling gently but firmly on the newest spears/early leaves... do they pull out of the palm? If so, that is bud rot. Pour antifungal down that hole and hope for the best. Any photos?...See MoreWhat is this, how do I fix it
Comments (1)That is a heater coil. This tub must not have an active heater and instead uses ambient heat from the motor to heat the tub similar to a softub. http://softubexpress.com/blog/?p=224 If it is cracked you probably have to replace it. Call the manufacturer. You can probably just disconnect the coil and slide it off the motor and slide a replacement one back on....See MoreUser
