Are they really 'ruining' the yard?
In my yard if I walk over the mole tunnels the grass roots reattach and the grass greens up again. Plus the moles are eating grubs.

You can try adding additional solar noisemakers--it sometimes takes more than one if the property is very attractive to the moles. Who are, as the Great God Thor noted, coming to eat a variety of things that are in rich supply in your soil. It could be grubs, earthworms, and so on, or it could just be that the soil there is particularly good for tunnels.

Liquid fence makes a mole repellent that you can try as well that's sprayed over the yard. Warning: it does not smell nice. That's the idea. Reviews vary, and I've never used it.

Tomcat also makes a granular repellent based on castor oil and a few other things. Reviews are better.

I've sprayed castor oil because I can and do get it very cheaply in large quantities (I'm a soap maker). 2 oz per thousand square feet plus 1 oz of any dish soap plus convenient water in a spray jar and rendered into an agitated emulsion (add about 4 oz water and keep gently shaking while applying) and sprayed over 1,000 square feet will tend to tell the moles to Go Somewhere Else And Not Come Back. Reapply monthly. This does not contain any ricin and it's safe for animals, but don't let them lick the grass as minor diarrhea may develop. Rolling around in it will result in a real mess. :-)

It's a sticky situation! You can't keep them out of your yard unless you enclose it in below ground screening, which is impractical. And homemade remedies or recommended deterrents have little to no effect. Really only trapping, baiting or gassing have much effect and all - except for using Havahart traps - are harmful/fatal.

But they are rarely permanent visitors. Once they eat their way through whatever grubs, soil insects and worms might be present, they move on to fresh territory.....usually the neighbors :-) But they also contribute some good - they are natural aerators and they will rid your lawn of harmful grubs and soil larvae.

I agree that just smushing down or stomping on the obvious tunnels causes little in the way of any permanent lawn damage and it is easy to fill in any mounds or hills with the excavated soil. They are something that I think you just need to learn to live with temporarily if mole murder is not on the books!

Repellents actually can work, if used properly. Please do not be fooled by absolutist thinking and the fact that some posters will contradict me if I said that the sun were shining and had photos. :-)

Many of us have had excellent success with castor oil, as I said above, and it may be worth a try. And check the Tomcat reviews for a...more extensive set of opinions, let's just say...that might be...of a broader mind-set than the above.

You will also find that they're more permanent visitors than you may wish, in that "temporary" can be a matter of some years. My population of earthworms is rather high and getting rid of my little friends took a while (I don't have grubs). The castor worked, but I had to keep it up or they would keep coming back!

By all means, do your own independent research to see what remedies are suggested and may have some effectiveness and what are just pervasive and persistent gardening myths. And focus on sources that have some scientific backing rather than the reviews posted by a company that sells so-called repellants and therefore has a vested interest. And it is always prudent to be open to varying opinons and experience instead of putting all your eggs in the single basket offered by someone who seems to think HIS opinion is the only one of value.

I had a mole problem last fall. Really bad with mounds everywhere. I tried a repellent powder that didn't work. What finally worked for me was a good old garden hose. Each day after work i would insert the hose and put the water on full blast until water was coming up in different places. I did this every day for a week until I saw no more mole hills. Lawn recovered nicely this season. I don't know if I killed the mole or simply wore him down until he found another place to live. I am also against killing animals when there are other alternatives, but after awhile of cat and mouse and mounting frustration it becomes "him or me."

I don't do this at home. A mole would hardly be noticeable with the menagerie of varmints I live with. I don't recommend it much either. Their tunneling is rarely much of a bother. I have done it as a spot treatment when the tunneling is ongoing and in a bad location.

Moles are predators. They eat grubs and worms and bugs and such. Eliminate the food supply and they will go away. All kind lawn poisons for bugs are on the shelf at the big box.

Voles, well that is another matter. Damn varmints!! I find cats to be the most effective remedy for that.
