Wood tile on BBQ Island: side only or countertop too?

Kathy Milano

I'm building a BBQ island in the corner of my deck. I found some wood-look tile I really like for the side of it but I'm having trouble choosing the countertop material. My first impulse was to match my tan travertine-top coffee table that's close to the grill, but that color looks odd against my stucco walls. Would it be cool or just wrong to continue the espresso-colored wood to the countertop?

1) The corner where I'll be adding built-in BBQ island and kegerator, flush with walls

2) The same corner with a bit more perspective, including the coffee table I'm thinking of matching countertop to. I'm thinking the wood (below) will coordinate with the dark wicker furniture.

3) Wood tile I'd like to put on the side of the island and possibly counters too

4) Nearby travertine coffee table I'm thinking of matching countertop to

5) counter material option that matches coffee table but doesn't look great next to the stucco wall of the house

So again, the question is: Wood on side and counter: yea or nay? Or wood on side only and then what on counter? Thanks!
