Would you stain a wooden kitchen countertop?
Comments (8)Hi, There are a couple of obstacles with a countertop that don't apply with furniture or house woodwork generally. You want it to be more waterproof, and you want waterlox. And on top of that it's maple. Dye doesn't care if it's dyeing paint, skin, shellac, wood or I think, even waterlox. I would make a sample up as follows: dilute waterlox 50/50 with thinner, and apply a coat to some maple; I think sanding to 220 will suffice (you'll need an extra piece or could you use the underside?) When the waterlox is fully dry (give it a week) mix your dye in alcohol at full strength (how you get your color: look at the sample sheet for transtint and solar-lux and choose. Provincial is like golden oak + black) and wipe on with a saturated soft cotton cloth. It will stain the wood evenly. If there's too much color, you can wipe off (within a few seconds) with a clean cloth moist with alcohol, which will lighten it some, but never get it all out. Provincial is a somewhat light color, so the maple really needs to be sealed with something to prevent splotching. If I were working on regular furniture or woodwork, I'd seal it with thinned shellac, but you need water-resistance, which is shellac's downfall, and you can't waterlox over shellac, either, so this is the best I could come up with. Once the dye is to your liking, you can put on three undiluted coats of waterlox. Just be sure to do a sample, and if it fails let me know. Comments (2)IMHO, it only works well if the countertop is a different height than the other countertop run. It doesn't have to be but a couple of inches higher or lower, but that's what visually looks best to transition. Same height transitions look a bit awkward, and you always have that caulk line in between the two different materials. Even a good caulk line will get old and look grubby and fail in time....See MoreDo you chop on your wood counter top?
Comments (12)I had edge grain rock maple BB in my last kitchen & I chose it again for my new kitchen, the main reason being the functionality of cutting on it. I use cutting boards for meat, but basically, I think they're a PITA & one more thing to clean. I oil my counters 1-2 times a year & I don't find that they look overly scarred or beat up; a serrated knife will chew up BB & I avoid those. I suspect that dark species of wood like walnut would tend to look faded & dry more than a light wood, but I'm guessing. IMO old cutting boards look particularily bad because of water damage caused by submerging or soaking them or putting them in the DW - all things that shouldn't be a problem with a counter top that's reasonably cared for. Of course, if you want a countertop that looks like fine furniture with an unblemished finish & exquisite grain, cutting on it would not be the way to go....See MoreCounter top bar-do you need supports?
Comments (16)Our raised bar on the peninsula will be 18" wide. About 5" of it will rest on the supporting wall; about 1" will overhang on the counter side; and about 12" will overhang on the other side where bar stools will be placed. It will be granite and therefore pretty heavy - its 7' long. We didn't want corbels to interfere with seating, so our granite fabricator is routing the underside of the granite and installing 1/4" steel plates under the bar (every 18" or so) as supports. The routing allows the steel plates to be flush with the underside of the bar. They will be visible only if one bends over and looks up underneath the bar. They charged nothing extra for doing this....See More10KDiamond
