Need your help choosing a sofa and giving our living room a makeover

Our family spends most of our time together in this room. Desperately need a new sofa, preferably deep, durable, and cozy! Also looking for suggestions for chair(s), endtables, and window treatments. Only thing in this room that needs to stay is the rug, and I have original door/ sidelight off white lace panels. Sooo ready for a change. Thanks!

Refinishing the floors to a lighter shade to contrast with the wood trim and rug would be a big change that would inform other choices. If the couch is covered to protect it - any new couch might require a covering as well. You can get new foam for the cushions if that is part of the reason for wanting another couch. Or if you plan to replace the couch see if taking off the blanket is a good change as far as style. You can save on replacing the furniture and put it toward the flooring which I think would make the most impact.

Thanks! Definitely need to refinish the floors. I hope to end up with a natural toned finish.
The sofa is broken in several places and needs to be in the dump like last year.

jerseygirl, I love your green chairs, they are beautiful. I have done some rearranging and what a difference a minor adjustment of bringing the chairs closer together makes; the room feels more intimate already. We will add built-ins in black as teacats suggested, to fill up the space on either side of the f/p. We have been fixing up bathrooms, kitchen & basement during the two yrs. we have been living here, and there is a room upstairs of artwork and packed boxes of ornaments and personal objects that are crying out to be unpacked - finally we can get to it which is the reason for the furniture arrangement. I have included a pic looking into the dining room, which I mentioned also needs tweaking. We have been on the lookout for a new DR table; something more in the MCM style with a dark stain and I am planning on hanging 3 pictures of a similar theme on the far wall to break up the boxy space. We also need a new ceiling light. Back to the living room - anele, I like your idea of the chair in the corner. I think that could work nicely with the right table and reading lamp. Must get shopping!! I have decided that the icebox needs to be moved out of the room entirely, it really just doesn't work. I will try it in the front foyer. The shape of the room and the furniture we have has made this project such a challenge, but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to all of you. P.S. I love monochromatic spaces so love to mix shades of neutrals! I think it will be beautiful and soothing together...I think your wall color may be to yellow...that might be something that needs to be changed...or it could just be the light? What color are the walls?

I just grabbed the first interesting rug that came up in the search. esalerugs.com Make sure you get the proper size, bigger is better. If you aren't sure about an online rug, order the smallest size available to check the color and texture. It will be much easier to return if you don't like it.

Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood. I was hoping for examples/ input on style, color etc... boxy? Rounded arms? Fabric pattern or no?

I think I would want a couch with low square arms that are equal to the height of new end tables. Low arms make it easier to stretch out on if used for napping and easier to reach drinks on an end table. I have a leather couch and a fabric covered love seat. The love seat is much more cozy, the leather is stiff. I got the leather because we could use it to take a break from working outside (dirt on clothes - mud on shoes). I would go with neutral colors and add texture and color with pillows, throws or fabric covered foot stool. Are you considering shades? I think Roman ones could look good. Also think about how many cushions for couch - one, two or three. I wish I had gone with two instead of three for the couch and one for the love seat. The plus side of more cushions is that you can move them around if one side of the couch is used more than the other. Also do you want to be able to remove the back cushions or do you want them attached. Do you want to be able to flip the cushions on the seat - I can do it with my fabric couch but not with the leather. Some stores have a basic model with customization - cushion firmness etc. Ethan Allen has some models you can customize. Also think about VOC's - Pottery Barn has certified furniture for those concerns.
