As someone on the forums would say, if they're hardy plants, plant them. They aren't babies, they don't need coddling.

Thanks...i wanted to give them a winter in pots until i decide exactly where to plant.....hence the question of how to survive the winter...

You didn't say if you've been growing them indoors or outside.

I like to take advantage of the summer months and leave my seedlings outside all summer in partial sun/shade so they build roots and photosynthesize, all the way into late Fall when cool nights and diminished sun exposure causes the seedlings to go dormant.

Next, place them somewhere that stays cool enough so the stay dormant (35f-45f degrees).

You want to be able to check on them so they don't dry out and secure enough so varmints can't prune them off for you.

I've never grown in zone 6 so I assume it's a lot easier than zone 3 where I live.

my garage can get pretty cold in a bad spell..10-25 degrees...

Not sure how cold sequoias can endure.

All my conifers left in my cold frame, outside the house are zone hardy to at least zone 4.

Is your garage attached to the house?

If it is, you could put an insulated box of some kind up against the wall next to the house. That would help keep temperatures from changing rapidly. Of coarse if it gets too warm, your plants may come out of dormancy early and begin to grow. That would be bad if temps went down again and froze the plants.

If they're hardy to your zone, that won't make a difference. What might is swinging temperatures. I'd heel into the ground for the winter, if it were me.

I agree if Sequoias are zone hardy in your area. Outside, in the ground, with snow cover is the best for overwinter, even here.

Any way you do it, there will be a learning curve and the first time around might work out fine. Either way you learn something.

Also, the link sam_md posted echoes the theme that Sequoiadendron giganteum doesn't do all that well, long term, out east. Sequoia sempervirens has been somewhat more successful, from what I understand.

Your Metasequoia glyptostroboides should do fine.
