What color/fabric should I recover these dining room chairs?

I got an amazing deal on 18 of these chairs. (They were $8 per chair. 😱) I want to reupholster the seats but not sure what color and fabric I should go with? The wood is a dark cherry so they don’t match my dining room table very well and I might end up re-selling them after I reupholster them so I’d like to go with something neutral. (I also won’t be doing the plastic cover.)

IMO the bright red finish makes them less saleable in the future. I would either paint the frames of the chairs and leave the seat cushions, or reupholster the chair seats in a striped classic fabric.

If you really like the chairs maybe you should refinish them. I would not sell them if they still had the plastic coverings on.

Webbing over the opening, woven with about 1" between the weave,horizontally and vertically, covered with upholstery foam cut to fit, then wrapped with batting and then fabric. Leaving the seating base open, supported by woven webbing, precludes the potential 'whoopee cushion' effect when guests sit (or so my upholstery instructor stated 30 years ago.) It's pretty easy to do with a staple gun - did 10 of them in a day a couple of months ago. Just staple one side of the webbing, then pull down tight against the opposite side of the seat and staple the opposing side of the webbing and then cut to size - no special tools required for slip seat dining chairs other than a staple gun and pair of scissors, they're the easiest upholstered piece to reupholster. Go for it - you'll love the results!

I know mix and match looks like fun, thinking not for your table. Put the two rattan chairs on either end and four of the same, but different seat cushions. This chairs is $89.00 at Walmart and comes in three other colors. I like this one because it won’t outsize the two you have.

Take it from someone who goes to a lot of estate sales, consignment and thrift stores...you can't sell 18 of these chairs for much more than you paid for them. Sad but true, there's a ton of high quality dining room furniture being turned in by boomers downsizing so it's hard to sell it. But, I do love the idea of painting them. Once painted, you could sell them. But then hopefully you'll keep them. They have great lines. And now you know why I have 13 dining room chairs with great potential in my garage. :-)

Thank you all! I was a little skeptical on them reselling very well being the cherry color they are. The seats are actually stained underneath the plastic so I don’t think I would try to resell them with these covers. If I can have the seats recovered to a fabric I can live with and will make them more desire able to someone else in the future, I’ll probably do that until I find 8-10 of the -perfect- chair for this room.

I also would love to paint the chairs but I just don’t have time and not sure it would be cost effective to have it done professionally.

Chalk painting them won’t take much effort, as they don’t have to be sanded. I would only work on 8 chairs and see how you like them for yourself or see what the response is when selling and if worth the effort to do the rest

Look on Facebook Marketplace to see what something similar is going for. Also when selling, place them around your table vs lined up in a room or garage. FYI: These were on sale in my neighbourhood 4 for $100

There is no way to know what the buyer wants in terms of the color of chair they would want or the color of seat.

One person may want the unpainted wood and so they would never buy a painted chair.

Another would be thrilled with a white painted chair.

People may have very specific ideas about the fabric on their chair and it is so easy to recover a chair cushion.

As mentioned earlier, these types of chairs are selling for such a low price, and with their matching tables.

I would just sell them as is, and people can change them as they wish.

They can be painted if you want to keep them.

If selling don’t paint or recover. The fabric on the seats are neutral. Not everybody will want off white or gray. I see things all the time for sale where the listing says how it was newly refinished or painted etc. The cost is usually higher too and I take that into consideration when I typically think how I would change the finish or fabric of the piece if buying.

I think you’ll make out better leaving them as is to sell.
