Herd immunity, eh, you go get infected and if you survive without using medical care, come tell me about it. I'm all too keen to withhold help from those who infect on purpose. Not that I, or any health system, would.

Sweden tried herd immunity. Disaster, and they never reached even close getting it.

I would be willing to take a vaccine - I have signed up for a trial but there's too few infections here to be a test of effectiveness.

How do they test for effectiveness of the vaccine?

LOL I think vaccines are the artificial but safer way of achieving 'herd immunity', aren't they? The natural way would cost many many lives. Graywings I'm sure the researchers have criteria they will use to judge effectiveness, and we can only hope they are able to measure it well enough to figure it out. I wonder if there are any mice being developed to have this covid strain -- so much I do not know.

Vaccines can have side effects so they aren't without risk. The efficacy tests (done in the third phase of testing) are being run on humans not mice.

Yes, vaccines are a part of herd immunity (hence my earlier comment about waiting to be a part of the vaccinated group). But you have to have a viable vaccine to go forward. And phase 3 doesn't mean "Roll it out, it's all solved!" it only means we're on to the next step. If anyone tries to claim that, they're insane. It's a process, not a magic wand

Rob - how right you are!!! Many vaccines fail at the Phase 3 level. It could easily take years to get one.

There are 3 vaccine candidates in Phase 3 trials in the US:

In addition to the AstraZeneca vaccine, Moderna’s vaccine candidate is already in phase 3 trials in the United States, as is Pfizer and BioNTech's.

in case anyone didn't catch my reference.

Surely everyone realizes that when a vaccine/ vaccines is/ are approved and then manufactured in large quantities---that if you want the vaccine, then you are going to have to get in line behind the politicians, health care workers, essential workers, long term care residents, prisoners, multiple risk (obese, diabetic, heart disease...) patients... Doesn't matter if a vaccine gets here this year, next year, the year after...most of us are going to be sent to the back of the line. Quibbling about 'just when' a vaccine first becomes available? Pointless. Pick a date and then add 6 months is my guess for the majority of us.

Right, Cilantro, but as all those people are vaccinated, herd immunity goes up a bit and we are all safer. In the meantime, get your flu shot, OK?
