One of my favorite Austin roses - Chaucer
Comments (23)In his book David Austin's English Roses (2nd ed 1996), Mr Austin lists 16 roses which he felt were superseded by newer releases. Amongst those 16 were Chaucer & Pretty Jessica. He did add that some people would disagree & where these roses were doing well, they should be retained & enjoyed. He also had a further 9 roses which he considered inferior and would not recommend growing at all. I am not sure whether royalties had anything to do with this or whether he just wanted people to see the best of English Roses....See MoreMy favorite rose
Comments (10)Brandon, isn't it funny how you didn't even have to name CdM, and John recognized him? He is truly one of the greatest ambassadors for OGRs. I plan to try growing him again someday, in a sturdy 25 gallon nursery pot instead of my tiny garden beds. Thank you for bringing Charles to the foreground this spring! John, your photo of Charles is gorgeous! It perfectly captures his purple Gallica status. Peter Beales' said his favorite OGR is Maiden's Blush. It was his gateway rose, too. My MB has two open blooms and a pile of buds. I was just outside smelling her lovely self yesterday eve. I tried to capture her color with my camera but failed where you have suceeded. The shades of CdM and the MB photo sure look spectacular next to each other as I scroll down! Thank you for starting a great thread, Brandon! I can't add an image of Charles or Maiden's Blush, but maybe Paul will post one of his famous CdM images. Here's a photo of my favorite rose of all time, another purple Gallica. My hedge of Tuscany Superb is just beginning to open. I literally pull up a lawn chair and stare at it. Carol...See Moremy-favorite-yellow-roses-for-summer

Comments (5)I love the name Ragged Robin! There are quite a few roses which were once used for rootstock which are very good roses themselves. When I first got into roses, I was told that: "A rose may have a sucker which comes up from the base and always has red blooms. These are EVIL and must be gotten rid of as soon as possible. The always have 7 leaflets - that's how you tell they are suckers, along with the color of the blooms" I walked away thinking that a "sucker" was some sort of disease! All, all, wrong, of course. Yet I was told this by several people. As I learned more about roses (and what a sucker was actually, as well as what rootstock was) I was amazed at the ignorance of most people who thought they knew a lot about roses. Canard is a good word to describe these sorts of statements - I like that word. No bad intentions on anyones part - they were just parroting something they had been told, but got offended when I doubted it. Also, of course, all sorts of other "rules" about what must be done, what should never be done, etc. My most unfavorite statement is along the lines of "all old roses only bloom once", which I am still also seeing in articles (and even some speeches) by people who should know better. I even I still see some of this in some articles in the ARS magazine - it is so amazing to me. End of rant, and I apologize that my comments have nothing to do with Ragged Robin, which is a lovely re-blooming old rose which was once used for rootstock, and luckily was thus spread all around, and discovered all over, as it was healthier and more persistent than whatever scions it was grafted to.
