If modern is the aim lose those shutters for sure they actually take away from the very nice windows you have. Where are you planning to put the planters? there does not appear to be much space for planters and IMO black is the perfect color for planters with that door.

the porch is about 7 feet deep (picture really doesn't show that) so room in terms of depth - maybe something on one side only? there is 8" of brick to the right of the front door (again, tragic mocking up skills covered that up)

Many times when people say "modern," they seem to mean -- updated according to our current idea of what looks better. Which is not necessarily 'modern.' Hard to tell which is meant here.

For foundation landscaping, a picture needs to be taken from standing straight out from the front door, standing on the city walk, and take a full panorama of the house showing all the way to each side lot line. This can be done by using the pano feature of a camera. Or it can be accomplished in a series of slightly overlapping pictures taken while panning the scene -- all taken while standing at the same spot and pivoting.

Those are going to work against you. You've already got too much stuff encroaching on the entrance. To have something taking up more floor space around the door/entrance is a net negative.
