Here are some photos of the two types we were looking at. My husband photo shopped them in to my daughters room which already has white trim and our kitchen area which doesn't yet have new floors or trim yet. We are open to other door options though! The doors are expensive so we want to get it right!

Thanks for the feedback! Here are some additional pictures of the downstairs living room/sitting room/kitchen area. The cabinets in the kitchen were painted white but eventually within the next year we will be changing them out for updated ones and different counter tops. I also included a picture of the flooring we will be going with to replace all the carpet and oak laminate you see in the pictures. We will also be removing the half bannister in between the kitchen and living room when the new flooring is laid.

How about something like this design? This would look fantastic, it’s got arches but in a modern way, so best of both worlds.

Hi kiffkat! Thanks for the suggestion. I did have that door in the running bu my husband is worried about all the dust that would collect in the groves so we took it out of the mix.

I don't like the arches either, but really it's just a matter of personal opinion here.

tiffany2125 I realized none of us really answered your question. I do think your door choice with the straight lines is a good choice. personally I don't like how the inset is a beveled line where the middles pop back out again (I'm not sure how to describe that that). it feels just a tiny bit dated to me? (it reminds me of what was used for "craftsman" style new builds in the early 2000s.) I recommend something like this:

as far as dusting goes-- I don't think a door like this would take any longer to dust than the ones you posted.

If you want solid core, I highly recommend real wood. Just leave a little more room than MDF around the edge to accommodate seasonal expansion/contraction (if a door does end up sticking, it is very easy to sand and paint/stain an edge). I renovated a traditional Cape style house a decade ago and replaced the MDF doors with simple white painted pine doors and it transformed the whole look of the house. It was not that much more expensive but looked and functioned so much better. I love doors with "weight" to them and crisp edges. The paint is also much smoother than the grainy texture of MDF doors, and they are much easier to clean.

If you really want to make a statement, invest in solid oak doors and stain them. That is what I have in my current house (raised 4-panel red oak doors). They have been there since 1971 and are still in almost perfect condition in what is otherwise a gut reno house. A sanding and restaining and they would look new again. It's the one thing about this house that I actually like. I believe it's due to the timelessness of high quality natural materials. Mine have a beveled edge that helps the dust slip off as opposed to a flat edge.

I also have to disagree that the raised panel style looks dated. I think it's a traditional detail that has fallen out of favor due to the popularity of craftsman style (also a trend). It certainly does not help that most raised panel doors are cheap MDF models rather than genuine millwork. It's the "imitation" of the look, rather than the style itself, that is dated IMO. More elaborate architectural relief was quite expensive back in the day and the exclusive domain of upscale residences and buildings.

For colonial style doors, looks for ones that have 4-6 square panels. Go with what you love regarding edge and detailing. Something like the examples below. If budget is an issue, I would consider replacing the doors on one floor at a time.

Solid pine - I would paint these.

Red oak - more expensive, would be my choice for stain. These would be beautiful and since it's a hard wood, extremely durable.

Go with the squared version of the door you are considering. It is basic enough to not go out of style, still updated, and looks right with your traditional/transitional home. You don't want one that is too country or modern looking.
