What types of window treatments did the previous owner use?

I would be careful to not go too cool with your changes. It will be easy to lighten up and freshen the space without using grays. Light cream paint and a more neutral (not cool) floor will make a huge difference and be more appropriate for the architecture.

IMO window coverings are done after all the changes you are planning . On the arched windows IMO you need top down shades the doors need drapes that have a rod wide enought to allow the drapes to hang outside the frame. The other windows could do drapes or roman shades the drapes and romans in the same fabric but none of that until the changes are made. Painting that wood work and cabinets will be a huge job be very sure that is what you want. IMO there were drapes here before on some windows so obviously some support there for sure.

The previous owner had long sheers on the swing rods by the fireplace and back rectangle doors which were decorative only and looked a bit frumpy - especially with the radiators. The original owner (from photos) had heavy large, lined velvet drapes across all three window walls along with hardware on the lower two thirds of each window/door holding permanent sheers across each door and window using a top and bottom rod. If I find the picture, I will post it. It is sort of fun to see. (This is a home that has been in my spouse's family at different generations.)

The floor shown is actually the pine subfloor that was under the original horse hair carpet. While the wood is pretty hard given its age at harvesting in the 1930s, it has cracks, splinters, and (in some places) half inch gaps between the boards with light from the basement showing. When the last owner refinished it, they tried filler in the gaps which has been popping out.

ddeegw - I would be interested in knowing your thoughts behind not going too cool in the room- especially if the trim is painted a white shade. The intent would be to go into the white family. While I feel bad changing some of the original decor in the home, much is damaged, and the home feels very dark and sort of "dingy/dirty." All of the original light fixtures used that yellow tint glass shade and walls were very yellowy.

It doesn't sound like you are opposed to losing the architectural peaks at the windows?

As long as you have a deep enough header on any type of shade it could be outside mounted above each window. For example of you wanted a woven shade, a roman shade etc you could mount them above each window and do a deeper header 4" or more that the shades would be mounted on.

Otherwise I would do one long double transversing rod with sheets and simple linen drapery panels that can be opened and closed the expanse of the windows.

What are you thinking of for flooring? Just this room or are you replacing all flooring throughout the house? Will the rest of the house be changed to a cool palette instead of a warm palette?

When I commented not all of the photos showed up you posted. My comment remains the same but I have more specific ideas.

I do understand the respect of not changing wood etc. as mentioned . However unless this home is historical in the sense of it being on the historical register and therefore needs to be preserved to original standards I am of the camp that you live in the home and should make it what you will be happiest with and envision.

I would first establish what your style is. From you idea book you only have one photo which is light bright fresh and modern. If that is your vision Then work towards it. That one photo is all about white, light and texture. Besides that, are there any other colors you want to bring into the home? What about the adjoining rooms and whole house? Will this be carried through its entirely? You don't want to have original in one portion and this in another. That said the look of all white would work with the wood trim or keeping certain wood elements. Bringing your wall color up to a white would do the trick. The walls do indeed look dingy like you say.

Lancaster! What a beautiful home. Do you have a concept of look you are working toward? How many people in the family will be living here? Ages? New slim style radiators would be a good addition. Hope you will keep the character of the home because it is pretty rare. Please keep those windows and arches. So special. You can do more modern furnishings and still retain and enhance the basic bones of this home. Need more info to help further.
