window treatment dilemma- please help!

Hello everyone!
Just wondering if I could get some help. I’m super stumped on what to do, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

We are trying to finish up our new daughters room, and are looking at window treatment options. We have hunter douglas on the bottom portion (they’re not black out, and this room gets a lot of light in the evening).
I’m looking for ideas on the top portion of the window (the semi circle), or the whole window?

I would like to have the room darker as eventually she’ll be sleeping in here - once she’s a bit older.
This is the only room in our house that has a window like this.

Would it be silly to have a curtain rod at the top of semi circle, with black out curtains? Or is that a big design faux pas?
Any help or suggestions would be amazing - I just want our daughter to get restful sleeps.

There are a couple of ways to treat a round top window. As you stated, one is to have the curtain rod above the top, with curtain panels that open and close. However, for a bedroom that you want to block light, you'd need rather heavy bulky curtains. And you'd have a large stack back for them to be full enough to open/close.

You could also have a pleated shade custom cut to the shape of the window.

Now the last option is to remove the half circle window. I had one of those in my bedroom and removed it and replaced it with a 12" transom. I also installed an awning outside to block the western sun. I have another of those windows in a family room and had a honeycomb shade made. Honestly, though, the shade is NEVER open, so it defeats the purpose of the window, and I'm considering removing that one as well.

Maybe we are unusual but we have never had any blackout curtain or shades on our bedroom windows ( that we keep closed). Unless there is a bright light shining in the window, I would think that it should not be a problem. It seems that making a room dark would just foster the " need" for making it dark?

By cafe curtains, do you mean the tiered set? I'm just not sure what that means? I always think of kitchen curtains! How would I mount a curtain rod from the ceiling? I once had regular curtain rods before I put in the seat, but with the roller shades, there is no place to put the rod hooks. I don't want to block off the windows as in the first photos-I mostly need to be able to block the extreme sunlight and provide some evening privacy if needed.

Hi @ratherbesewing. I initially wanted to do that but ended up buying a 10 by 10 foot L shaped sectional which based on my current layout plan will end up blocking the alcove. I could place the sectional such that it doesn’t block the alcove but would block the kitchen instead. But then I am afraid of the flow between kitchen and the living room. Will have to play around with the layout. (Please ignore the furniture in the pictures, these are pictures from the past owner of the house)

Thanks for the comments everyone. The previous owner had long sheers on the swing rods by the fireplace and back rectangle doors which were decorative only and looked a bit frumpy - especially with the radiators. The original owner (from photos) had heavy large, lined velvet drapes across all three window walls along with hardware on the lower two thirds of each window/door holding permanent sheers across each door and window using a top and bottom rod. If I find the picture, I will post it. It is sort of fun to see. (This is a home that has been in my spouse's family at different generations.) The floor shown is actually the pine subfloor that was under the original horse hair carpet. While the wood is pretty hard given its age at harvesting in the 1930s, it has cracks, splinters, and (in some places) half inch gaps between the boards with light from the basement showing. When the last owner refinished it, they tried filler in the gaps which has been popping out. ddeegw - I would be interested in knowing your thoughts behind not going too cool in the room- especially if the trim is painted a white shade. The intent would be to go into the white family. While I feel bad changing some of the original decor in the home, much is damaged, and the home feels very dark and sort of "dingy/dirty." All of the original light fixtures used that yellow tint glass shade and walls were very yellowy.

I agree with Grapefruit. Babies will sleep when it's light, as evidenced by all the day sleeping they do. If they get used to sleeping in a blacked out room, that will become a necessity, so naps at grandma's or other places might be impossible. Same with noise. Get your baby used to sleeping when it's noisy and you'll be able to take her anywhere, she'll be able to sleep anywhere, which is a great convenience.

You could also do an opaque film on the upper part of the window that will cut down a bit of brightness.

Hey There: the bottom blinds you picked don't really compliment the window - there is a reason why you picked this style with three panels and now you are just covering it up. Three individual panel would be the right choice - operating bottom up and top down of course.

And your arch on top? Not a problem at all: and of course operable if you want.
