When we added onto our house (a first floor great room, and a second floor master suite) we moved our dining area into the former living room and I did just what you are thinking about - I have a sitting room where the dining area used to be. The spaces are not large - they all open to each other and the kitchen. We took the chandelier down from the old dining area and installed a ceiling fan. I have baker's racks with pottery, plants and baskets of table linens. I have a loveseat and a comfortable reading chair + ottoman in the space. I call it the "cook's nook". No t.v. - I refuse to have one in that end of the house. I have one of those compact Bose Wave radio/CD players and I listen to it all of the time. My husband built bookshelves under the overhanging countertop of the old breakfast bar - we took the stools out. I have my cookbooks and gardening books there, and can display pottery there too. So now we only have one place where we have meals, and that's at the dining room table. It's in front of the old fireplace that used to be the living room. We hung a chandelier from the cathedral ceiling in that space. There's a staircase in the room that goes up to the spare bedrooms. I have room for several large buffets, one along the staircase and one under a bank of windows. Overall, we love the repurposing. We have no "only use it a few times a year" formal areas in our house. It works very well for us. The t.v. is in the new great room. I can get away from it whenever I want lol. seagrass

If the end wall in the second pic can be a solid wall, you might be better served to have your tv centered on that wall (or in one of its corners) and have your sofa (w/sofa table or desk or cabinet or bookcase of equal height behind it) serve as a room divider between entry and seating area rather than having foot traffic forever walking between your tv and your seating area.

My husband and I just moved into a new home, and are trying to design our living room. The current furniture in the photos is from our apartment, and we plan to move it upstairs to the game room. Our challenge: finding furniture that fits the space that we can relax on, but is not as casual as the current deep sofa (lounge ii from Crate & Barrel w/ double chaise). My husband and I both lounge when we watch TV and relax at night and we plan to use this room as our primary TV room. The Lounge ii is heavenly, but is not good for conversation or for having people over to socialize. We want to have enough space to lounge but also seat 4-6 people comfortably if we have guests over. Room dimensions: The distance from blue back wall to end of the current sectional is 134 inches. It looks like we could potentially push it back to 140 inches and still have enough walkway between the end of the sofa and the bar stools The distance from the window wall to the start of the hall way is: 168 inches Right now sofa has 17 inches of space between the window and the start of the sofa. The end of the sofa sits 140 inches away from the window wall. Questions: What type of TV stand/media center and what color will look best in this space? I really like the big media centers that are about 88 inches tall and take up most of the wall width, but I am concerned that having a big media center may make the room look smaller, but also think that the current style TV stand looks awkwardly small in the room. What seating arrangement would work best for the space that will allow us to lounge on it, but will also be good for having guests over? We were leaning towards an L shaped sectional like the Pearce Roll Arm 3-piece L-Shaped Wedge Sectional from Pottery Barn, but once I measured it out I am worried it will make the space looked cramped (121 inch x 121 inc). We are planning to go with a white or an off white sofa but I am open to suggestions. What style/size coffee table will look best in this space? The current coffee table we have feels too large.

I don’t know how to take your plan and add furniture to it 🙃... so I will just explain how I would place your sectional. I would float the sectional where the back of one side of sectional is to dining room and the back of other side, is to the kitchen. That way your window and fireplace are the view from sitting on sofa. I think this would be an ideal set up for your space. You could still add a chair in the corner between window and FP, or place an additional chair directly in front of window, without obstructing a lot of your light.
