I have known about Facebook Marketplace but never used. Craigslist is my go-to. But recently I have had some things to sell or give away and decided to multi-list. The person who bought an item yesterday found me via Marketplace.

Yes! Much higher end than Craigslist and far less sketchy.

DH listed a bike rack on C/list and I put it on FB m/place. I've had several inquiries but he's had none. Unless you count the one from NM who wanted us to drive to the state border, meet there, blah, blah....;) I'd forgotten about N/door; will do that now!

I have looked at it a few times but never saw anything good. I just checked again recently because I haven't seen anything good on CL either. I don’t need a single thing so probably good I haven’t found anything.

I never paid attention to it until recently. Just a couple of weeks ago, I bought a Stickley mission oak 42” round coffee table for $500. Original price around $2500. It does have some scratches but I kinda like them. I’m so happy with it. Then, I sold my former coffee table on marketplace for a very good price.

I've never used CL or FBM. I've looked at CL a few times, but there's never much that's desirable in my area. I am on the mailing list for a local estate sale company. Sometimes, I see nice things in those sales, but nothing that has ever motivated me to go to one. I have too much already, so I try to enjoy shopping online without actually buying anything. :-)

I only recently discovered FB Marketplace, too, after my friend sold several household items/furniture on it while in the process of downsizing. I decided to go take a look, and there seem to be some really good items in my area. She had good luck with everyone she encountered--she liked being able to check out profiles of people before they came to her house for pick-up.

Jinx, what a bummer! But I love the purchase you did make. Jojo, I agree, I mostly see better stuff than on Craig's List. As Feathers mentioned, you can somewhat "see" more about a person from their profile, and a few things I've looked at, I've seen the seller and I have mutual friends. I'm getting ready to put a chair on there to sell. I have sold through Marketplace before. We have a local FB online yard sale and you can choose for your add to also show on Marketplace. We sold some outdoor furniture and a cast iron fire pit when we had a stone fire pit built. The outdoor wicker furniture I could have sold 10 times over. I'm planning to sell some items from my dad's house on there too!

I’ve sold several things in Next Door. I have been looking at Marketplace quiet a bit lately but haven’t bought or sold anything yet. I have a few things I am planning to list and will likely list on both sites. Some friends have sold probably 80% of what they listed. It seems like a lot of people are mobile this time of year so a good time to put it out there.

I just picked this chair up today. I am redoing a few things in the livingroom and it was love at first sight. I am going to match it up with my DH’s reading table At 65.00 it wasn’t really a steal but its hand painted and upholstered and after meeting the seller I love it even more

I've been recommended to use it. There used to be a resale shop in town I would get all my great finds at, and Goodwill and antique shops. Now they're all marginal as far as safety. Not the items, just going out and having to spend a lot of time in those kinds of stores sifting through all the stuff to find the gems. It's not a good "time in store around other people vs reward of finding what I need" ratio. Might as well try sitting at home surfing . . .

A couple of months ago, I got a great deal on a lamp by checking a local Facebook Marketplace group. Turns out my friend who lives about 5 minutes away from me had refurbished and was selling it, so we sat on my front porch and had a nice masked chat when she brought it over. She charged me $25 (her asking price on the Facebook page; I neither asked for nor received a friendship discount; even had she offered one, I would have insisted on paying the price she'd advertised), and it came with the shade and a bulb. I later saw a similar lamp, without the shade or bulb, listed on Etsy for $319; I recently clicked on that link, and it looks as though they've reduced the price to $250.

No, I find it hard to navigate as it’s so full of ads from retailers. If I could find a way to view only local listers, like within 50 miles of me, I’d look at it more often.

Littlebug, that's how mine comes up - local! I can set it up to 100 miles. When I search for something, after showing within my area, it will show me items outside my area. I have very few ads. I'm not sure if it's how my facebook is set up or what because I didn't change any settings for marketplace. I'm now looking at a 1940's wood office chair. LOL

All of the furniture local to my FBM looks like it belongs in a pool hall or a fraternity house!

I like FB marketplace but I've had bad luck actually buying what I want before somebody else claims it.

for getting rid of stuff, I love the Buy Nothing Group. I live in a mixed income area so some of the people are truly in need of all kinds of things. I like the feeling that I helped someone. sometimes people ask for specific things and almost always a neighbor is able to provide. things I tend to offer up on the group:

• items that are too nice for goodwill (like laptops or smartphones)
• school supplies (barely used notebooks, backpacks, etc)
• things are too big to fit in my car (like an old ikea wardrobe)
• items goodwill would never accept (like mattresses or -- no kidding -- an open box of laundry detergent I didn't like)

it's a great way to get rid of stuff that might have ended up in the landfill.

In addition to the distance range, there is a second filter you can use. If searching for something specific, click on DELIVERY METHOD and change from ALL to LOCAL PICKUP.

I wanted a larger armoire in our bedroom and that was our last buy on Marketplace. Lucked up again! Now I have a smaller one to sell (in the future) and will use Marketplace.

I use our local FB groups that are for buying and selling and giving and receiving. They don’t use the FB sell feature, and I like them because I have a pretty good idea of where the item comes from, and because of the “six degrees of separation” phenomenon, can be pretty sure that both parties will act fairly. And, I shouldn’t care I suppose, but I’m also pretty sure that when I put an item up, the buyer won’t turn around and sell it elsewhere for more.

The downside is, that it limits availability.

Karges, Baker, Hancock and Moore, Tropitone, Karastan, for example. Lately, however, ziltch. Is it Covid, or perhaps the good stuff is now going to other outlets such as FB? I will have to check marketplace out.

maybe they just mean a better user experience? FB is professionally designed and offers messages and ways to keep track of your transactions. Craiglsist design is straight from the 90s and you have to basically shift to your own email when you want to deal with someone. (IDK, it's been a million years since I've used it.)

Just a guess, but FB might have better capabilities to report, track, and ban nefarious users, but I'm not sure. I haven't come across that problem yet.

I haven't yet, but I've given things away via the FB Buy Nothing ____ (your region typed here) pages. There have been a couple things I wanted that I saw, but others got to them there, first. I have found homes for two things (something I ran out of time to return to Home Depot, a rug that turned out to be not worth a pile of beans (but could be great in someone's mudroom or a kid's bedroom, just NOT quality enough in a living room - and they made it difficult beyond words to do returns), and some extra chickens. I'd hatched some of my own along with the order I'd placed, and was terribly surprised with 8 out of 10 survivors - and not enough space. SO, a few got another new home to lay in, and someone just wanting cockerels got what I suspect will be dinner when they are big enough. (Which, TBH, I would have done myself, had I the coop space to raise them to size, atm.)

I feel a bit safer with market place. Two people that I sold items to we actually knew a good friend of one snd the daughter of the other. We“ve had no scammers on market place. My husband sometimes sells items On Craigslist and you almost always have to weed through scammers.

Since my last post, I deleted FB. I am missing Marketplace (but can look at DH’s account).

The last thing I bought from there was this lamp. I’d been looking for a vintage horse lamp for months, then saw this one right here in my town. It’s not vintage, but looks it.
