Philodendron bright yellow leaves at center of the pot

I got a new philodendron Brasil a week ago for my new apartment.

Small leaves at the center of the pot are turning bright yellow and can be easily plucked up from the soil without any roots attached to them. other older leaves seems to be doing okay.

This plant was repotted at the nursery when I bought it. Currently, It is placed on the top of a bookshelf in a medium indirect light corner of my room. I watered it for the first time on Monday and sprayed with Neem Oil because I was afraid that pests were causing the problem. I allowed water to run out of the drainage hole when I watered it.

Please let me know what can be causing this problem!

This is one leaf that I plucked out from the soil in the center of pot last night. there had been 2 similar leaves a day before.

I find this philodendron can grow happily with less water. I move it outdoors for summer where it either gets rain or when I water everything else, I will give it a drink (not heavy). In winter I can neglect it for long periods and water sparsely.

Indoors it goes into a corner next to a light stand in the basement for six months. I don't worry about dying or dead leaves until I move it outdoors.

Outdoors it grows to the point of cutting off long vines when I bring it back inside around Halloween.

Dear seil, thank you for reassuring me about my rose :) it's my first one and I bought it without knowing anything on growing roses, had to catch up quickly on the internet after the purchase) hopefully it will be fine (as I also have another one to repot after blooming). As for the water bulb, actually the rose hasn't touched it for 2 days (after I hosed it through), so it's just there in "emergency" case (is there such a case with roses?) as the temperatures really go high unexpectedly here during the day. But I will take it out tomorrow to see how it goes without it) The mesh is the remedy from my dogs - they think they are great gardeners and tend to dig out soil from the pots (they share the terrace with roses), so I try to discourage them from it for no one was hurt :) Do freshly replanted young plants need water-dilluted fertilising? Internet resources say contradictory things about it.. Help?

This is actually how large Aroids grow. Aerial roots grow in the crease between the oldest leaf and the stem. When the plant becomes taller (or longer, I should say) this will become more evident. The oldest, tiniest leaves naturally yellow and die, however I find this takes longer for M. Deliciosa (another large around, if you're familiar) than many of my other plants. If you are fertilizing, the white residue could be from that, or if you have hard water it may be from that too. Picture is a little unclear, but it doesn't look like mold to me. How did the roots look when you repotted? If they were brown or squishy, it could be rot caused by cold damage as suggested above. This is my monstera. You can see the aerial root is growing out of the stem just above a dried leaf that I cut off.

Hi Russ, was hoping you’d see this one!! I had been trying to figure out if it was a Philodendron or a Syngonium, too! My first thought was Philodendron, but there is a Syngonium with the same colouring & very similar leaf shape I’ve seen at some local plant boutiques, but none of the plants I’ve seen have been as big & mature as this, so it’s hard to compare leaf shapes definitively with a juvenile plant! I wouldn’t have thought it was overwatering - when the first few leaves started yellowing I had not watered any indoor plants in a couple of weeks as a couple of my other plants had fungus gnats & I was ensuring they didn’t spread/continue. At that stage I thought it must’ve been suffering from underwatering, so have been watering a fairly small amount every 2-5 days, depending on the weather... (its mostly been 27-34 Celsius here lately). The soil is dense, but quite sandy... this is just the soil the plant came in, so I assumed it was growing well in it. I normally use a succulent mix for my indoor plants so that they dry out quickly & I just water regularly. I normally check most plants soil are dry first 2cm or so before watering..... Still think it’s overwatering? I’ll post a few more pictures of the plant, vine structure, etc if that helps when I get home!

My guess would be Calylophus berlandieri. Especially considering the location. Mine are just starting to bud up. Also called yellow sundrops. They also come with black centers in some populations. Did they go change that name . Someone should tell LBJ Wildflower Center. I hate when they do that.

The yellow leaves are just old, dying leaves and completely normal. If you had half the plant or more turning yellow then you might have a problem. Just remove and toss the yellowing leaves or let them stay where they are. They will eventually turn brown, and then to compost/dust. It is Nature's Way.

Natural attrition. Didn’t you say the plant had recently been repotted? That could cause a few older leaves to fall off.

Your first photo shows a healthy looking plant with one yellow leaf in your hand. The second photo is of one yellow leaf so it would be hard to say anything other than observation from two photos.

It could be stress from leaving a nursery, grown under greenhouse conditions and subjected to living in a box for a day or more, and then to a retailer, and finally the buyer.

Give it time. Let it adapt to its new home. It may not be happy for a while but either it will succumb or perk up. Do NOT keep it sopping wet and do not let it totally dry out either. If you err on one side, do it on the drier side.

Again, moving it outdoors for warm air, bright light, higher humidity may be the ticket to get it what it needs before winter.
