Help! How to place furniture in the family room and dining?

The family room is 17’3” x 17’6” and the dining area is 15’7” x 15’2”. I’m afraid to buy furniture that might not be proportional to the rooms

First post a plan that can be enlarged. How big is you TV , how many people do you need to seat usually?What ar the dotted lines in the FR do you have a LR too .Do you have some pics of the spaces?

TV is 65 inches. It’s usually going to be around 4-5 people. We do not have a separate living room. Hope these pics help.

Center the rug with the fireplace. Take the bookcase out of the left corner of the room and put that in the space between the kitchen and FR, where the console table now sits. Move the sectional down toward the fireplace, (after centering the rug), add an end table to the outside of the chaise part of the sectional. Someone sitting there wonÃ¢ÂÂt want to move to get a drink off the coffee table. Be sure there is a lamp there as well, to light that corner of the room. Move the armoire to angle in the corner where the sectional was sitting originally. Use it for storage, perhaps add shelving or even a pull-out shelf for a computer center which can be closed up and put away. The piece is very nice, and gives good height to balance the fireplace and high ceilings. For now, try the console on the wall to the right of the fireplace, and place the new flatscreen on that. Later you may prefer a more substanial cabinet, which can hide other components and store DVDs, etc. If you do that, then try the console table behind the part of the sectional that has its back to the kitchen. Add a comfy upholstered chair in the corner, a bit closer to the fireplace, where the armoire was, along with another small side table and lamp.

The plan separates each living space with access from a central hall. It would work well for an office building but not so much for a house especially f you plan to entertain. I find that trying to make a good plan out of a bad one is usually a waste of time and effort. Its like renovating a house that hasn't been built yet. Decide what you think an entertainment space should look like and develop the house around it. But I would not design a house around an occasional use. The interrelationships of family members should be the dominant theme of a house. And I would never put a level change in a living space unless there was an alternate wheelchair route. If you plan to entertain, the front door should have wheelchair access too. An accessible half bath would be good too.

Hi, anita212. I think your room size can accommodate two seating areas. The arrangement below is pretty much to scale. It features a 7' sofa and four arm chairs that are modestly sized (about 36" x 36"-ish). The two seating areas are bridged by a low bench. Most of the seating can enjoy the fireplace. It appears that there is a door leading to another area to the left of the fireplace and I've placed a console to its left. Hopefully, this will give you some ideas.

Thank you for all your suggestions! All were great ideas! So this is what Im going to try. Leave the current setup in front of the TV and just bring the sofa in a bit more to make space for sofa table and then creating another seating area with 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. Also move the chaise near the bar with a floor lamp. Perfect! One last question, should i place a small rug in front of the fireplace area( maybe a round one) or leave it?

Keep in mind the main pathways in your space. They should be a minimum of 36" between a hard surface (wall or table edge) and furniture. If you can do 42"-48" it's even better. They can be narrower between furniture, window wall, fireplace and end tables/coffee tables.

The edge of the dining table needs to be at least 44" away from the back door. This will allow the door to open and people to pass freely while someone is sitting. Same thing needs to be considered by the island.

Your breakfast area is almost as big as the living space. In this case I might use a table in the corner and build an L-shaped banquette where all the windows are, if you can fit the seating in under the windows. Then you can use the other end of that bank of windows for something else, like a reading chair and ottoman, or a small desk. Or you could back a sofa up to one end of the cased opening and put a sofa table behind it, not obstructing the opening but a little closer to it since the informal dining is farther away.
