Name this Zone 5b orange wild flower!!

Found this beaut while hiking in the woods near my house. Would love to incorporate into my landscape so I’m hoping it’s not toxic or invasive. I’m a novice when it comes to gardening but would love to learn more. Thank you!

im not going to tell you the common name.. because there are too many plants with the same or similar common name ... lol

it should be available.. without you stealing it from the woods.. unless its your woods ...

august would probably not be the best time of year to dig it up ...

it is not invasive that i know of ...

and you wont have much of a garden if you insist on nothing being poisonous ... i mean really.. go out there a graze a belly full of lawn ... see if it makes you sick ...

i am not aware of any toxicity.. but you can find out with the name above ...

If you want hummingbirds don't go for the dwarf spendens offer at every garden center because they are poor attractors. The coccineas Lady in Red and Coral Nymph are both excellent hummingbird plants. You are about a full zone too cold for most of the New World hummingbird salvias. Salvia greggii White might be hardy for you if your soil is well drained, especially in winter. I'm wondering if greggii Wild Thing might work in your climate and perhaps the hybrid Raspberry Delight. Both are very sturdy perennials in my zone 6B/7A garden. You might consider doing some mail ordering - Plant Delights Nursery, High Country Gardens, and A World of Salvias come to mind. You might also want to join the Studio 54 hummingbird forum. There are quite a few members who live in your zone.

Impatients capensis,phytolacca americana. The Impatiens,(Jewelweed) is an annual and spreads around by seed.Hummingbird and bee favorite.Good for treating poison ivy. Very easy to pull out where not wanted.

Yes, what you have been told is completely accurate!! Rhododendron is the state flower of WA state - they grow wild here - and virtually every single garden has a selection of them and various other acid loving, ericaceous plants (a great many of which are natives). This is also a large commercial growing area. Soils here are naturally only slightly to moderately acidic (6.0-6.5 with most falling about midway). These plants thrive in our soils and in our climate. It sounds like your area is already in good shape to plant these selections. However, planting within the root zone of any large tree can pose issues with moisture availability and sometimes nutrients as well, so they may need a little TLC until properly established. As to fertilizing, it is not recommended to fertilize at the time of planting. First, the plants have already received a dose of what they need from the grower and the process of planting creates stresses that make absorption of soil nutrients difficult so providing more only adds to the stress. And never add fert to a planting hole!! Most ericaceious plants are not heavy feeders anyway and require very little fertilizer typically. I would wait until next spring before adding more. And the Holly Tone or any other fertilizer recommended for acid loving plants will work fine. They all contain acidifying agents to help keep the soil at an appropriate pH level and to facilitate with nutrient uptake.

A pH of 6.2 to 6.3 should be fine for the things you're interested in planting. Adjusting pH downward by using sulfur is not necessary and is more difficult to achieve then it seems. As for "sheet mulching" producing a "nice clean area", if you think that spreading mulch will prevent weed germination or the sprouting of root pieces left behind, it really won't do this. A better approach would be to leave the bed alone until germination and sprouting have taken place. Then uproot the weeds. If you have the patience, repeat the process a second time. HollyTone is a good product, but does not provide much of anything in the way of organic matter. No idea where you live, but many suppliers of landscaping materials sell mixtures of compost and partially decomposed bark under such names as NutriMulch and others. This is an excellent product for incorporating into a new bed that increases water holding capacity and aeration. If not available, partially decomposed bark used by itself will provide similar benefits. The plants you mention are not gross feeders, but if any show signs of nutritional lack, then's the time to use small amounts of HollyTone. I'd also be cautious about using large-growing hostas and astilbes. These can be rampant growers that have the potential to crowd out other things.

All milkweeds have toxicity, that's probably why monarch caterpillars feed on them, they accumulate toxic compounds to discourage birds.

These don't tend to transplant well so leave it. With all the interests in pollinator friendly plants you should easily be able to find this at any good garden center. Or go back to this plant in a month or two and collect some seeds and grow your own.

I have this in my garden. Started from seed, by winter sowing. It is not at all invasive for me. It has reseeded gently and spreads out a little. It gets better and better as it matures. It was a little on the slow side to mature.

Ken, what other plants besides Asclepias tuberosa go by the common name Butterfly Weed? I don't know of any.

many peeps call it butterfly bush ... just like the other butterfly bush .... so i didnt want to tell him butterfly anything....

Yep, butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). FYI: It is illegal in some states (and I would argue unethical everywhere) to dig plants from the wild. Fortunately, this one is readily available at nurseries.

We have this in our native perennial garden and it’s beautiful. Worth a trip to a good nursery to get some. It did draw monarchs for us. It has not spread much at all so is not what I would call invasive.

It has a deep tuber and the stem is brittle so it is not easy to dig up. The box stores have seeds for it in the spring and they grow from seed readily. I have one in my veggie garden that was brought there by the wind I guess. It has come up in a crack of a RR tie so I can't remove it easily so it lives there and blooms every year along with volunteer zinnias.
