Yup. Mines a big winnie the pooh jar. Its a little over half full. When I cash it in at the bank its usually a couple hundred dollars. SO has one of those cups with a coin slot that counts it for you when you put it in. It's a lot smaller and usually holds 50 or 60 bucks worth of change. I like change. But most places do not want to take cash right now, so i am not getting as much as usual. 😕

Here in my area stores are begging for change. They have posted signs asking people to trade in their coins for bills.

In normal times. the small cup gets taken to the change machine at the store regularly, for a (free) Amazon certificate. They always get used quickly.

Yes, although, mine hasn't been added to in a long time. I don't carry a lot of cash these days. My "jar" is a big smiley face metal ball that's a pain in the butt to open.

I usually spend my change pretty quickly except for quarters which I save for parking meters although a lot of those are moving to digital only.

My bud had a house fire. He lost $2,000+ in coins. They fused together from the heat, even though he did not entirely lose his house. (Was able to rehab.) Firefighters had to shovel out hot embers and he saw some of his fused coins shoveled in chunks out of the second story onto the driveway below.

I have a “Savings Account” (actually a cute and colorful painted Mexican ceramic bank for each granddaughter). My loose coins go into those.

i have a small coffee can on my dresser i toss coins in. i also have two 1-gallon jugs that are both filled to the top with coins. i would imagine there's probably $200-300 in those, combined. they weigh a ton! one of these days, i'll take them to the bank.

Ninapearl, you have much more than $200. I keep a jar similar in size to a quart Mason jar. When it's gets full I take it to the credit union's counting machine. It's usually around $75.

Since the credit union isn't open for walk-in, I guess I should take it to the grocery store and get a gift card.

I don't use change much. I might have $20-$30 worth in my car. I use the quarters when I go to the selfie car wash.

I have been saving pretty much every $5 bill that I've received for the last 20+ years. The stash is somewhere between 5 and 6 grand now. Probably should put it in the bank I guess but it is comforting to have a nice cash stash for emergencies. I haven't added much to it during the pandemic because I haven't been using cash much.

I'm saving for when the washing machine croaks, probably have close to $500 in change. Ten years ago, I had been saving for what seemed like "forever" and paid for the new washer totally, nothing from our regular bank account. I immediately started saving again! That last washer lasted 25 years, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen much nowdays.

I did go to the bank and asked about turning the change in, when I read about the shortage. My bank doesn't have a counter, they wanted to send it off to another branch somewhere and expected that to take four or five days, round trip. And with this much involved, I'm certainly not going to let the machine at WM take 10% of it. No Thanks! I'll find another bank one of these days that does have a counter!

Hmmm I don't know if they still have it but TD Bank used to have a coin counter in each branch and it would give you a receipt that you could bring to the teller for cash. They did not deduct anything for the service. It's been a while so maybe this is not current- anyone know?

When I cleared out my late MIL's house last year, I took about 10 lbs of coin to WalMart and received a WalMart gift card for the entire amount.

DH saved pennies for years. We dragged them all over. Finally after 30 plus years I convinced him to cash them in. I looked them over for the wheat backed ones in case we might have a “winner.”

Less than $100. DD said, you should have saved all coins for a bigger pay out.

Salonva, I used to be a mystery shopper for TD bank. One of the assignments was to check if the coin machine was correct. Most often it was not. And never in the customers favor. Not large amounts, but still.

When TD opened, anyone could use the coin machines. As time went on they restricted to only customers. They opened up full force. One or two banks per town. Now many have closed.

Yes, I have a change jar....no idea how much is in it. It is an old vinegar gallon jug that Jody brought me back from Florida. I also keep several dollars worth of change in a container in the console of my truck. I do use cash and pay with exact amount.

I also used to save $5 bills. It does add up fairly quickly.

My small bank has a roll your own policy. So I have a bowl on the dresser and when it gets full I roll the coins. And they go into a pretty old fashioned metal lunch pail. Lunch pail goes to the bank when it gets full.

When we both were working, it was quicker and easier to dump any loose change into a coffee can and forget about it, rather than deal with it. Once in a while we'd "mine" a can for quarters. Every four or five years DH would carry the cans to the credit union, and get $200 or so dollars? hard to remember exact amounts.

Since retiring, we're better about accumulating only a soup bowl's worth of change at a time before cashing it in. Smaller house, less room for stuff sitting around.

I haven't paid much attention to the coin shortage -- is it because so many bank lobbies are closed to regular customers that people aren't cashing in coins?

I have a couple change collections. One is a tall Tupperware Beverage container filled with mostly pennies. I can barely lift it. Another is a teapot filled with all kinds of coins. I Ihink,there’s a $100 bill under there, I’m not sure. Then the other day I pulled a coffee cup that I never use off a top shelf and it was filled with coins! I guess my purse got heavy so I dumped the change in there. I also have a change purse in the car for feeding the parking meters. If there is a coin shortage, it’s because of me.

There is a bank near me with a free coin counting machine. I’m not sure if their lobby is open now, but I need to get in there! The grocery store has a Coinstar machine but keeps a good chunk of the money. One other time I used that machine and it kept displaying a message that said “my, you have a lot of change!”

I toss coins into a quart jar and use the quarters at the laundromat when I need to wash our king size quilts. One of our local stores was offering to run coins through their counting machine and exchange them for cash so I took mine in. Ahead of me was a guy who had brought in two 5-gallon buckets full of coins. It was going to take hours to run those coins through their machine, so two employees and I counted my coins on the counter so they could give me my $32 in exchange.

This amazes me. What are you paying for that results in change? We might have a dollar's worth of coins in a cup holder in the car. I have had the same $32 in bills in my purse for almost a year. We probably spend $500 a year in bills, but that doesn't result in change back; it's primarily tips, donations into charity cans, other 'even amount' expenditures.

*Everything* we buy goes on cash-back credit cards, with the balance paid in full monthly. These earn hundreds of dollars a year -- funds applied as credit against statements.

Many recurring charges (utilities, insurance, etc.) are paid auto-deduct from a checking account; I pay a few by check.

I have two of those tubs that you can take home from the hospital somewhere filled with rolled quarters. Which is nice except the bank I use wants them loose. The credit union my husband had an account removed all of the coin counters and others were saying the same thing. Having watched one of the banks bags split at the bottom sending coins that they insisted had to be loose one day I think I will just use one of the coin machines at the grocery and receive credit for Amazon for the loose stuff.

I use actual money in those situations where it takes longer to use a credit card than to push real money to the clerk and receive change. You can tell by watching people in line in front of you how fast the processing machine works. Some are fast others take forever.

Our banks would put it in their machine, given you cash, no charge. It's not as if anyone counted it. STUPID.
