don't go dumping that yet until you really authenticate it. it might be "brush" pottery. based on whether that is little boy blue or clown bust, your cookie jar is worth a nice chunk of change, seriously. and i'm almost positive the lid does belong to the bottom. are there any markings on the bottom of the jar? anywhere? maryanne some history: Brush Brush Pottery was started in 1925. George Brush first worked in 1901 in Zanesville, Ohio. He started his own pottery in 1907, but it burned to the ground soon after. In 1909 he became manager of the J.W. McCoy Pottery. In 1911, Brush and J.W. McCoy formed the Brush-McCoy Pottery Co. After a series of name changes, the company became The Brush Pottery in 1925. It closed in 1982. Old Brush was marked with impressed letters or a palette-shaped mark. Some new pieces are being marked in raised letters or with a raised mark. Collectors favor the figural cookie jars made by this company. Because there was a company named Brush-McCoy, there is great confusion between Brush and Nelson McCoy pieces. Nope, doubt it. The outline of the material is the same in both jars, and whether she is looking toward or away from the boy is just a matter of how it was painted. Somebody may have just gotten bored and decided to make her look the other way. However, that doesn't mean it isn't rarer and may up the value a bit.

Lids are often the first piece of a cookie jar to be broken, because the projections used as a handle are applied after the main piece is molded. Certain patterns were really P-willies. I remember the dog cookie jars at Nelson McCoy they were running when I was working there. The handle was the dog's tail. Argh. We still have some local pottery outlets who have bins of lids for replacements. They're not marked to pattern or even maker, but if one has the patience to sift through hundreds of them, they can sometimes find the match, or at least one to make a useable cookie jar. Good luck. No cookie jars in my house ! I would have to refill it every day if I had one around, too much temptation. I will occasionally buy ONE really good big cookie at a great bakery or store in my area with the intention of eating it later. I did that yesterday a big, warm delicious chocolate chip cookie , they bagged it up, I had it eaten before I even got to my car!!! No will power :(
