PPF. I really don't know what the 10' ceiling has to do with anything. There are going to be walls on 3 sides of the new porch and I don't want to feel closed in. Where it hangs right now it seems to be more open and I think right now the ceiling (ie the deck above the swing) is 12' high.

10' is the width of a small bedroom. As space for a 5' swing, it's more than adequate. If you don't want to feel closed in, make sure there is nothing obstructing the view from the swing.

strategery, It is a swing that my husband loves and I want to find a nice place in our new home. I know the photo does not show it well (you can see the chains). I will try to take a better photo tomorrow. I guess my question would be--Since the present area is 20' wide x 10'deep x 12' high that is open on two sides which makes it feel more open. The new house will be 20' wide x 10' deep x 10' high that will be open on one side. If I could cut down the width by a few feet I would like to add the extra feet to the width of our master bedroom.

I think you could do 16' if you wanted. The issue might be symmetry of the roofline.

strategery, it is a porch swing. Like I said it does not show well in the photo. I found a swing in my program.

Strategery it is a bench seat on chains mounted on a ceiling or in its own frame. You swing on it mostly gently. You need a decent width and depth to swing on it. I have one and I love mine but it is on my back patio.

I would leave the porch area as wide as possible. You may find 16 feet too small if you want a dining table and other seating plus the swing. Also the side wings of the house will contribute to a more closed-in feel.

I don’t know your climate or the orientation of this porch, but screening and a large ceiling fan might make a more livable space.

Thanks for the link and photo. I should have been more prepared before I posted the question. We are in the later years of our lives and I want my husband to have a place to sit and swing and look at the beautiful Wyoming landscape. We don't entertain or have an outdoor grill--we would have to bolt it down to keep it in place.

As I posted above this will only be for a swing and I don't think screening it in would be a good option and the ceiling fan would not be necessary because at times we have way too much wind. That is why I want it covered to maybe break up some of the wind.

I am sure my builder will know what to do. He has built several covered porches in this area. The way the roof is in the mockup is generated by the default of the program I am using. I am not concerned about the roof right now--I just want to get an idea of the layout of my plan.

I forgot that I do want a couple of chairs for me to relax. I changed the siding color so it is a little easier to see the swing. I am not sure the door placement is right. Should the swing and chairs be close to each other? Below is a photo of my husband's swing. Looks like it need a lot of TLC.
