This rose is lonely and needs some companions...
I'm trying to figure out what to plant to the left and right of this rose bush.
On the left (where the trash can is) I am hoping to find something taller than the rose --
maybe 5-6 feet tall max - is evergreen, likes full sun and is drought tolerant and works as a backdrop to perennials. I'm opening to any and all ideas. I'm in zone 10 (Northern California) What do you think about arbutus unedo or olive or princess flower or ceanothus or mountain flax or pineapple guava (fejoia)? Dodonaea is too feathery i think. Would like something more dense.
Also need ideas for the right side to balance out the rose...Thank you so much for your help!!!
Also, should I plant some trailing/creeping rosemary over the wall to the right of the rose to hide the planter wall?

Comments (15)Sammy, I tried raised beds because that's what P. Allen Smith does. He has a really beautiful vegetable garden - you can see it in some of his books - and your library should be able to get some of those books for you to look at. They weren't too hard to build, but after the first season they were so full of weeds that I really couldn't weed it properly. I really needed something that I could get a tiller in to. But since the structure was already there, I tried to "solarize" the weeds. Then I put in soaker hoses, laid down black plastic, and tried to plant in holes in the plastic. (I mulched the plastic to make it look pretty). This didn't work very well, either. After a few years of trying with the "less work" raised beds, I took them out. I'm now starting over and am tilling an area to be the new veggie garden. I plan to plant sweet olives around the veggie garden so that you can't see the mess of a vegetable garden. I've got a short picket fence that I can use in the mean time until the sweet olives get big enough to provide coverage. In addition to the garden itself, there are a lot of things you can plant in with your roses that look good and thrive in the same environment as roses, as long as you aren't spraying. I've seen someone use strawberries, and it was both wonderful and delicious. I plan to do the same, as soon as I can get my hands on some strawberries. Comments (25)Here's a picture of the rose Istanbul which finally opened. I'm sorry it's not a better picture but at least you can see that it is blooming. This morning we saw that another iris has started sending up a bud. That makes the fourth out of twelve! I have read on the iris websites that the rebloomers do best in an area that has a long, warm growing season such as California. Apparently reblooming is not guaranteed in the colder zones so it might be a gamble....See Moreshow some free seeding companions
Comments (34)With the corydalis lutea, I'm afraid my seeds won't produce much in my climate. This is what I read about them: Blooming from May through September, Corydalis prefers well drained areas in full to part shade and will naturalize if conditions are met. Suitable for borders, rock, cottage and woodland gardens, this hardy perennial is intolerant of hot and humid summer conditions, and wet soil in winter that does not drain well. Hardy in zones 5-7 and reaches around 16 inches in height and will spread around 12 inches wide. Chances are not good for this beauty, since the prime characteristic of our climate is hot humid summers and wet winters. Well, all I can do is put them in the ground and hope for the best. Meanwhile, I have these columbines/aquilegia PLANTS, as well as seed (which are no problem), and I don't know quite where to put them now. Pot them up? They are in very small maybe 4 inch nursery pots squares, and look good, but of course not flowering. 3 years agoI wouldn't put anything tall there. I would do something like this.
Use a low Perennial that works in your area. I used a Dianthus and drew ovals for two more.
I'm not sure I would plant anything in the more narrow part of the planter with the Rose. I remember this is your mother's garden and she is not able to do as much as she once did. It would be fine with just mulch. I also think I mentioned last time that the wall is attractive and does not need to be hidden.
I grow and recommend Perovskia and Salvia leucantha. Both can get larger than people seem to imagine when they plant them.
My Perovskia is cultivar Blue Steel which is meant to be smaller but I'm waiting to find how tall it will get.
In general it is not good to have a lot of singletons.
