I ordered too much! What sizes pots to re-pot in?
Comments (18)70 miles away is far. If it must be pots, your plants can be OK in pots. Most gardeners have a more or less permanent pot ghetto in any case! I would keep the pots in part shade whenever that is possible. If they have to be in full sun for awhile, do check them every morning - as you head off for work, for example, or when you get home, if you usually get home before dark. Plant in a mix of potting soil and bagged topsoil. This would be my personal preference for water conservation, even though potted plants generally don't want heavy topsoil. I think any pots that give your plants some room to grow without being the size of Kansas should be fine. Trays or water-catcher things under the pots may help save you some watering work. In zone 5, if you can't get everything into a permanent planting spot by October, use the holding bed idea but just drop the plants (in their pots), into the soil. Plants in pots are vulnerable to freezing. Some people are able to overwinter stuff in pots in an unheated garage but from back when I lived in z5 I know for a fact that, when it was -12 outside, it was -12 in my garage. That's too cold for most potted plants, even if they're hardy in the ground....See MoreHave I killed my plant by repotting? :(
Comments (7)Hi Linda Thanks for your reply! I've just created my PhotoBucket account and uploaded three photos; first one shows what it looked like about a month into getting the plant(as u see it looked pretty healthy), and the other two showing what it looks like now - one showing the overall droopy leaves and the other showing close up of the spots. Photos are at this link: http://s1052.photobucket.com/albums/s450/Happy_Tomato/ I'm only using potting soil with no mix of perilite or what not that i see from most posts..i know it's probably not good for the AVs but i'm still finding it hard to get anything other than potting mix near where i live.. :( I'm not sure what the spots are.. i place the plant by the window but it is mostly in-direct sun it's getting.. As for watering, i place the plant onto a saucer of water (no wick).. the top of soil was very dry for the first week or so right after repotting because i remembered trying to sit the plant in the saucer for half hour maybe an hour tops but the top of the soil still seems very very dry. I did the saucer trick maybe every second night for that first week (because it was SO DRY and the droopy leaves made me think maybe it's because i'm underwatering) and still the soil was super dry. Until around 3 nights ago i sat the plant in the saucer for almost 2 hours and the top of soil finally feels a bit moist. I have not watered since. I do have a side track question - as you see in my photos, the plant is giving out completely different flowers in the second bloom (first bloom was almost white with hints of purple and many petals.. second one is full purple with 5 petals joined at the end).. why is that? is this normal? (sorry if this is a stupid question..) Thanks again and do let me know if you need any more info! :) Bonita...See MoreToo big or too small, pot for my Echeveria?
Comments (15)Sorry Ryan didn't notice you'd included number 6 in your comment at the top (even though I'd checked to see if anyone had mentioned it). I would have worded it differently. Plus I keep posting this and it won't work coz my Internet reception is in and out at the moment. So I hope this works.... no it didn't, but I've copied it and keep trying. Been trying to answer, comment, say thanks to things said etc. Anyway just after midnight, so might be better at night. Here goes...... Nope. 2am down the street?...See MoreI finally repotted my Jade plants, and I'd love to see yours, too.
Comments (20)Well I did a reply to the latest posts, but I can't see it now...so as not to be seen to be ignoring the replies, here it is again, no doubt it will now magically appear...twice! @Marguerite, thanks for the name Blue Hale, I hadn't come across that one before. I'll amend its label, you know how I like my labels! @ Rina, thank you. No particular secret as to their size. Maybe because of growing them hard, they rarely get any fertiliser, they're watered infrequently and get no special care really and spend their lives confined to the g/h...it works and suits me fine:-) @ Richard, thank you too. The blooms have taken an absolute age to develop from buds to open flowers and seem to be lasting even longer now in full flower....just wish they didn't pong so much, it's really an unpleasant smell in there especially when the sun is out :-/ My regular jades also flowered, they take a fair while to get from bud to open, but these beat them hands down in the 'longest time it takes stakes'. They (the ones that do flower) all generally start to show the first signs of buds around Jan/Feb, but just last sooooo long. I've only ever got the ordinary plain ovatas and this one to flower...so far. Regarding the downsizing, yes they can certainly be cut down, but I'd still have to accommodate them in the house come the day my g/h falls down! Don't worry, it won't quite be yet :-) I just have to remember to place the plants to dodge the drips from the roof, hope one of the glass panes stays put as it's bottom frame has rotted and remember not to open one of the casement windows as I need to replace the hinges.....oh the joys of house ownership! Gill...See Moreparty_music50
