Kitchens Flooring Home Decorating

Please help me find the tile to complete the floor

I recently moved into a home and the kitchen tile goes only until the sitting area and then just changes to vinyl tile. Right in the middle of the floor. I would like to replace the vinyl with the existing kitchen tiles but I cannot seem to find it. Can anyone help me out? It’s an 18x18 tile. It’s either stone or porcelain. The house was built 13 years ago.

It's very hard to find matches to something like that. Your best option might be to try all the surplus stores in your area that carry discontinued tile. I was able to find a tile match that way for a family member that had a house built using tile that was a widely-popular, standard-grade tile in the area at the time the home was built, but it's tough to find. You might consider replacing the entire flooring to get one match throughout the entire house if you can. That's such a positive thing you can do for your whole-house decor if or when it might fit into the budget.

Your tiles probably ran out of production a decade ago. And even if you can find a stash somewhere in someone's basement or in an old ma-and-pa thrift store you are going to run into dye lot issues. The colours will be very different from the tiles you have in the home.

Please take some room shots for us. We might be able to give you some better flooring tips as to how to go about adding new tile floors.

Yeah, I figured it might be possible, but I hope it's not the case and would be less interested in it if it is. I also thought that the tiles might be hand painted. However, the tile above the toilet and the first upper tile to the left of the sink (toward the shower) appear to be identical, as do the first and third (and second and fourth) tiles under the window, so I am still holding out hope that they are part of a series...

I highly recommend Crossville Tile. Below is the link. Click on any tile picture and it brings up all the colors in that category. They have hundreds to choose from. The best thing is if you call them, they'll mail you free samples, about 2" x 2". If you like the tiles, the flooring store will order them for you if they don't have a particular tile in stock. stock. They are a bit pricey though, but well worth it. We did our kitchen and laundry room in a rust and cream checkerboard pattern. The entryway has the same checkerboard pattern but in rust and brown. The style we used is "Color block". Thanks to everyone for your input. So many helpful suggestions. I have ordered a bunch of samples -- Duro and a couple other kinds of cork, two brands of linoleum, and... rubber! nosoccermom, I will also think about a painted wood floor. It's a look that I love, though it may be a bit "country" for our apartment. Interesting to hear from checkerboard-floor folks who regret the decision... we have B&W vinyl now, in our "before" kitchen, and we have never had a problem keeping it clean. Maybe I just have lower standards than most! ;-)

I have remodeled four full bathrooms and a half bath in the past ten years in two different houses. If you're trying to pick things out at Home Depot or Lowes, I suggest you go to a store that specializes in tile or flooring instead as they will have designers that will help you coordinate all of the different parts in a bathroom (counters, shower walls, flooring) at no cost. If you live in a rural area this may not be an option for you, but I can tell you that this approach has helped me a lot. They should be able to stay within your budget. The place I use has options across all price points. They can also recommend installers. I like your thinking about keeping a similar color palette across all the bathrooms, but not doing it exactly the same way in all of them. The things you like make sense in an older home (pre-war). If you have a mid-century rancher you should go in a different direction.
