What don't you like about it? Is the surround painted trim or something else? It's hard to see the details in your pictures.

You have a great home and great dining room chairs.Have you considered (a) painting the room a light color?, (b)adding a light colored rug, (c) getting rid of that spidery looking light (thats the first thing that I noticed when looking at your room).

those are good ideas. I think I don't like the firplace surround.

You could always paint it or stencil it. What kind of colors are you interested in?

Looks like that mantel is made from marble. They likely used this because it is non-combustible and can be made to go right around the fireplace opening. Marble does not paint well, and because it is right up to the opening, paint would not be able to handle the heat.

So my suggestion is to remove the mantel and replace it with a wood mantel stained to match your trim. To accomplish this, you will need to make the mantel taller and wider in order to meet code since wood must be a certain distance from the fireplace opening on the top and sides. You will also need to make the hearth wider to accommodate the wider mantel.

Here's how that might work conceptually:

Notice how everything that was on the mantel is raised up a but. The candle sticks are up higher, but I put the picture on top of the mantle so it is only raised a couple inches. I also added a custom fireplace screen with andirons to hide the metal fireplace and give it a much more finished look. You will need to paint the brass trim on the glass doors, remove them or replace them with nicer doors that disappear behind the screen.

I added a brownish toned marble slab hearth and facing, but you can use all types of materials for this including tile, marble, granite or slate. I also covered the raised hearth with wainscotting around the face of it.
