Can I dig amaryllis in the summer without harming them?

I have some amaryllis bulbs that someone gave me about 5 years ago. I planted them in the garden, but only one of them never bloomed. The foliage takes up a lot of space. I'd like to take them out and give them away so I can plant something else in that spot. Will digging them now harm them in any way that will keep them from blooming in the future (if they ever will - maybe someone else will have better luck). I ask because I got them as summer-dug bulbs, so wondering if that is maybe why they never bloomed. Since one of them did bloom, I know they're in a decent spot, and they get good care.
