Aside from reopening schools for in person classes, this is about the dumbest move I can think of.

Not in my area of the city but there was an article in the news that listed about ten sites where Walmart is planning on doing drive in movies in their parking lots. Not certain about there being any movie type popcorn available.

Did they say what safety precautions they are using?

Dedtired, no we won't get rid of the virus because it's not possible. The only virus that has been eradicated is Smallpox because the vaccine is highly effective and massive inoculation missions delivered it into every country.

Maybe prophylactics instead of popcorn and candy bars.

I think what dedtired was referring to was getting "rid of the virus" as a daily public health risk that, to this point, has dramatically altered everyone's choices of daily conduct.

The production and administration of effective vaccines will do that. In the meantime, the hot spots will be contained and minimized when we have effective governance and public health measures. And compliance with same. That day is coming soon too.

Foolish. Kaths--I'm with you. I love the movie theater. I used to go to a real old school theater where they show awesome independent movies, some new stuff, and classics. It's on a lovely pedestrian street with amazing restaurants and cafes. Oh how I miss it. BUT, it's not worth my life. We make popcorn at home and watch netflix.

Well, Kentucky has had one of the highest positive cases today, 801, 8 deaths. The highest was a couple weeks ago, I think, and it was around 1000, then it dropped quite a bit. Looks like we're headed upwards again. ) :

Ours have tried to open for weeks now...but the options for what they are playing are sooo old I can't fathom who attends. I think bars and casinos being open is much more risky...people moving about..forgetting to keep 6ft between ya. At a movie house once seated near your family, 6ft apart, pretty safe really. Just as safe as church and we have had no issues. Masked, 6ft apart, exposure to others for less than 10 minutes, good ventilation it should be work but again why go when there are not movies being offered ya can't see at home?

I don't think Church, Synagogue, Mosque or any other house of worship is safe. Especially if there is singing! I appreciate the Archbishop has said it's okay to watch the livestream and stay safe.

As always community makes all the difference. We have been back at Mass for two months and all is well. There is a smart way to go about it--especially if your community has low covid loads as ours does. We are PERFECTLY safe here!

I can understand missing being able to go to a restaurant or live show. But a movie? Haven't people already been watching a screen for the last six months?

I got an email from Regal the other day about the precautions they are taking. Our Regal is suppose to open August 21st. The seats will be sprayed with a disinfectant machine after every movie, 50% capacity, no refills on soda or popcorn, groups must have a certain amount of seats between them, restaurants and ice cream shops are closed, no self serve, people are encouraged to not hang around in the lobby. Masks must be worn except when eating or drinking. The open date has been pushed back many times and I don't think August 21 will actually happen either.

I think I miss the whole kit and kaboodle—walking Main Street, going in the shops, having wine and appetizers and a lovely latte after the movie. It’s part of an experience but at home the screen is just a “what else is there to do.”

I do believe our theaters are open here but with limited seating capacity. Our numbers are very low, but I won't be going any time soon.
