Hi guys question for you experts out there

I have a Hvac closet that is located on the second floor of my townhouse. I have a open return pipe without a vent in the ceiling leading to the attic . the warranty department is claiming that hole is on purpose for better results of the AC unit And thats is why no vent was placed on that returning duct. should there be a vent cover or not?

You did not indicate where you are located or whether this is a ‘normal’ practice for your region. I would say that hole to the attic should not exist at all.

Perhaps others might disagree.

Certain areas of the country do odd things, with that said *it could* be an opening to provide combustion air to a gas appliance.

If there is not enough air for a gas appliance it will make carbon monoxide and could poison the occupants of the home while they sleep. (making those sick up to and including death)

So without fully knowing *EXACTLY* what your HVAC system design entails... my advice to you is be careful what you read on the internet. Here or anywhere, really.

There is also an appliance forum in addition to the laundry forum. Most pro welding shops can weld aluminum. Whatever you do, do not discard the broken pieces. It might be possible to make a functional equivalent of the hinge.

Any fired clay product must NOT break down into a slimy, mess, when used in a gritty mix. But how can you know without buying a sample? Ask if they have a ripped bag, and get a few ounces and wet it with water, and see what happens. It needs to look and act like the small chips of a crushed, red-clay flower pot. No deodorizers, no chemicals, etc. Some cheap kitty-litter might be suitable...if it's not deodorized, perfumed..... or treated to clump, etc. Turface-MVP is best if you can find and buy it.
