Help with Layout for Awkward Farmhouse Living Room
We just purchased our forever homestead on farmland. I need help with furniture placement in this awkward narrow farmhouse living room. My dilemma is:
1) The awkwardly placed fireplace which is positioned next to the dining room entry way, which leaves little room for seating or furniture placement around the fireplace
2) The awkwardly placed windows. I wouldn't want to block the natural light coming in by placing a sofa directly in front of the windows.
Please give provide your best furniture placement ideas. Should I create 2 seating areas?
***Notes: A few things to note- the furniture in the pictures are not mine and will not stay. All new furniture will be purchased. The fireplace is functional and can not be repositioned. It will be updated though.

I would go warmer than this. Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White or Swiss Coffee could be possibilities. I like BM’s Natura Line.As far as furniture placement, I think 2 seating areas. One option, instead of sofa, etc. could be a center cocktail table or ottoman with four chairs.
Or if you would rather have a sofa arrangement. I would put a small scaled sofa on the wall facing windows.Small scaled sofa would go where black marker is in this view.

And sofa could possibly be larger; it is difficult to estimate available space there. so I am saying small scaled to be on the safe side.
And if there is to be a tv in the space, I would place it on long, low console in front of windows.
Additional seating by fireplace, but I have not yet figured out what would be best there. A chair or two, I think. Perhaps a chaise.Related Discussions

Comments (6)Maybe, push peninsula even further back to give more space within. keep chairs with people out of walk way. need panel on right side of microwave hood. Keep same spacing on both sides of window to keep balanced symmetry around window. Comments (9)Amanda, I am Neha from Styldod. Like all the others who have commented, I'd recommend a new couch for this space. The one you have is eating away a lot of space. Your options for furniture placement are rather limited. With 4 kids, no amount of storage is enough. A storage bench by the door and an end table with storage could help with clutter. I'd also recommend an ottoman as a coffee table so you can use it as seating if required. The shelf above the couch can be removed and you could make a gallery wall with paintings and pictures rather than having them hang everywhere. The images below are estimated to scale for your room based on the photos you shared, but it is very important that you share accurate measurements of your room. In this second design, I suggest a console at the entrance where a couple of low stools/ ottomans can be stored when not in use. You could do away with the kids' table and use these ottomans as seating for them. Also, a tall bookcase may be useful in a small space like this. Open cube storage is a great idea when you have kids running around. I would keep that nice armchair in the corner and would try to maximize the storage areas, so your kids have more room to play. Comments (6)Pretty...just too much furniture for your narrow room. I’d remove chair and ottoman. Also try removing corner section of sofa and make one long one pulling it forward to make room for drapes, then add a smaller coffee table. If room allows..you could leave lamp and add small table to opposite end. This would really open it up and give you breathing room. Perhaps a plant to the right of the fireplace? 3 years agoJust to add: I like present wall color, and I think if it were my house, I would keep it. I love the warmth and it works well with all the wood.
