Rug for living room with gray couch

Hi Everyone,

We finally got some furniture in our living room, and it's finally time to start decorating! The first thing I'd like to do is get a rug for the space. I have attached a picture of the living room in its current state with the furniture. We will be adding one more seat to the sectional, so it will reach all the way to the pillar on the right. Based on measurements, it seems like a rug somewhere around 8x10 will work best.

I am a big fan of neutral colors and would love to pull in both beige and gray here- I am not looking for a super colorful rug. However I'm unsure since the couch is such a cool gray (i.e. ice). Any help on the color/style of rug for this area would be very appreciated!

Hard to know how much/little color you want and if a more casual or a patterned rug is your preference. You are going to gets lots of advice, but may also want to look for inspiration on Pinterest - just search for rugs in family room or narrow even further with a color reference. Consider how you want the room to feel and accessories you lean towards - 3 very different looks below

Thanks so much, Maureen. I'm leaning towards a very neutral vibe- so nothing too colorful.

Beautiful room. I can see many colors doing great here. Tan, sand, camel, red, pale pink, emerald, royal blue, aubergine, butter yellow, light gray.. Black too-if you prefer something leggy and visually light. I agree-it'd be easier to tie the choice of the sofa with your other color choices, as in a rug you love. Or, if not much there yet-pick the sofa in the color that speaks to you the most. And go from there. That's potentially-less successful way, but that's what I did when I did not know better, and also didn't have what to sit on:) and I was pretty happy with the results. (truth to be told-still can't find this rug..)) Colorful sofas are much easier to work into the different color schemes, than it seems. Even when you repaint in, say, several years-most of the colors will still work. Just make sure you really love that color.

Beverly, I like the look you created. However, I just got the wall painted. It is a high ceiling so I cannot repaint myself. It is sand color (Wise Owl by Kelly Moore). I am hoping for the grey sofa, sand walls and brown floors to be the neutral colors that will not stand out. Only the blush/pink accents to pop. I did the opposite in the other room with brown floor, grey walls and brown sofa. and teal color for pop. Will light grey sofa achieve this goal better than dark grey?

I completely understand wanting a nice view from a home desk, especially these days. That said, the desk in the living room seems like an afterthought, and one that intrudes into your living room, shifting everything down to accommodate it. One possibility would be to remove it from there, and put a longer, shallower built-in by the dining window to serve as your desk. When you are working, the dining table can offer additional space to spread out resources. When you are entertaining, clear the desk and it can be a place to put serving dishes, flowers, etc. The living room then would truly be a place to leave work behind and relax. Just a thought, and I realize that it’s not part of what you asked about. You have a lovely home.

Ok. No problem. Just measure your space carefully and do a scale layout to see if the pieces you select will really fit properly. The room seems like there is a step down into it? Measure that. That is a spot you will need to watch for fall protection.

I like hand knotted wool rugs, which are available at attractive prices. They wear very well, and naturally repel liquids. You can also go to carpet and rug stores that sell higher end products and see if there are any broadloom remnants that can be cut and bound to your measurements.

Thanks! We actually measured the space out and found that a 7’10”x 10’10” rug fits perfect. Thanks for your help!
