Rug help in family room!

This is a picture is our family room. What size is rug would you put in the room? If you look closely you can see I have taped out with blue tape what I thought would be good but not sure. There will also be a tv shelving unit that takes on blank empty wall. We have children so we want a comfy cozy lounging area...no oriental rugs. Thanks!

I love the colors in this one for rooms that have gray furniture with some warm elements, too. But is it more traditional/transitional (and more pattern) than you’re wanting? Do you prefer more modern, abstract, cooler tones?

Just trying to get an idea of your preferences. :)

I like the rug that way you had it originally. I wonder, do the chairs really need to be replaced? They still look nice, as does the rug. I would do some serious decluttering of your space of all the small items. Would you consider a glass and metal coffee table that is rectangular so that more can be seen of the rug? You already have large furniture and this would open up the room, especially if you remove the smaller items. If you wanted to keep the rug, it could be tied in with the rest of the furniture via patterned red pillows and perhaps some new art that has red in it. The console for the TV is really too short for the size of the TV. If you remove the urn and greenery from either side you can have a stylish long console with nothing else needed there for decoration,

I’d break up the blue and grey by introducing a warm beige and some natural elements. A textured, tone on tone beige rug would create a soft and relaxed feel in room. New Zealand wool rugs are not that expensive and will last forever Then you could rethink your accent cushions

First thought is to move the whole seating area down toward the fireplace so the the end table is centered on the far window. My moving the seating area down, you may be able to have a sofa table behind for some lamps. I would look at plantation shutters although if I could convince you I’d go with drapes too. It will help to balance that wall out and add some softness as well as add some visual ‘pop’ if you chose a pattern. With that said, with drapes you wouldn’t need any artwork because the wall space would be taken up by the drapes. I’d remove the mirrored piece to the right by the entry as it looks like it’s floating out in space. I would also consider doing something else other than artwork. There is so much out there like wall planters, metal art, something 3-dimensional. Just an FYI, there are apps like BeCasso that will take an existing photo and turn it into a watercolor, oil paining, pop art. Then you can order it as print, canvas or whatever. I did some mediocre mock-ups so you can get a feel for what some of this would look like. I also included a pic of a house like yours so that you may want to put something in the entry. Well I’m more concerned about the size...what size would you get? Are my markings in clue tape on the floor too big?

Looks a bit big to me. The chairs could be pulled forward to create a better conversation area.

What is the rule about rugs under furniture? Also, is the rug too close to fire place? Where would you put chairs?

I agree that it looks too big. You didn't give any room measurements, so I just mocked it up in your taped area to get an idea. Agree with Ellen about maybe moving chairs in a bit. What is the size of your taped area?

Better looking size. For your room, I’d have the front feet of any furniture on the rug equally.

If you really want a rug that large, then plan to put all the seating entirely on it. I really wouldn't want it closer to the hearth than 15-18" so it isn't a fire hazard. A good general "rule" you could tape out would be to place it 18" from the hearth, slipping it under the front 1/3 of the sofas. Leggy chairs like your wings should either be all the way on it or all the way off. If you want a cozy family/TV room, I would replace the formal, upright wing chairs and the loveseat (which mostly hinders a good seating arrangement) with four comfy swivel chairs.
