What to do with the entryway

We have a great entryway with some wonderful details and I just can't figure out what to do with it or how to decorate. I would like a mirror somewhere, and backpack rack for 2 kids and 2 adults. It should have seating for shoe removal, shoe storage, and i definitely want to keep the key display on a wall somewhere.

It’s a nice entry, but you really don’t want shoes and backpacks cluttering up the floor and wall. But wait...you have a nice large closet! You should be able to store shoes and backpacks in that closet. Do adults also remove shoes? I also see a room next door with an ironing board. If the closet does not work (it should - it’s a closet!) then maybe add a bench and backpack hooks in that room. I will cross my fingers for you that the backpacks get used this fall!!

I have a townhome I am trying to get ready to re-rent. I need to cut costs somewhere because I am having to make a lot of repairs, updates, etc. but I want something that resists stains, and generally holds up to tenant abuse. I have been advised that a tight weave Berber would be my best bet for the living room, stairs and bedrooms. And I was planning to use porcelain tile in the breakfast room, laundry, kitchen, bathrooms. I don't want to have to do this again in 2, 3 or 6 years. Am I making the right choices? Now I have a bigger problem as well. This townhouse is about 30 years old. The entry way is red brick, and it butts up against the living room on one side (carpet). I was going to have it torn out and replaced with the tile but every carpet/tile place tells me that will cost me a lot to tear out the brick, depending on whether it is a full brick or half brick and what is under it. Since I don't know the answers to these questions (don't know if there is a way to tell, do you?), I just had a thought (strange as that may be)! I know they stain concrete and paint concrete. Could I do something like that right over the brick?? What would this entail? Its about a 6x6 area. Any experts out there? or "been there, done thats"? [Its not flat. You know, the grout lines (mortar) aren't level with the brick.] Need some answers pretty quick. Have to get this thing on the market PDQ. Thanks.

What direction does the back entrance face? What room does the door enter? Do your want the area for relaxing (ie patio and shade) or just more appeal? The walk is charming. I would think a patio from the same pavers with a pergola-type shelter (if shade is necessary) supported by columns matching the front entrance would be nice. Then colorful gardens, or a kitchen garden adjacent. I does appear that the grade needs correction away from your home. A patio with correct stone base will solve the situation as your siding is already close to the ground. Here's our back entrance and flanking gardens.

It looks like your entry might be right next to your dining room? I'm thinking the table with the pic over it is in the dining room? If so, the proximity makes it a little awkward to treat the 2 areas separately. I can see the need for something over the bench, but then you'll have a bunch of things all lined up on the wall (counting the furniture and what will hang on the wall). Maybe think about putting the picture over the bench and using something like a taller piece of furniture where the table is (like a small china cabinet, etc). Might not be in your budget right now (I see the baby/little kid stuff in your pics), but maybe on down the line? If that might work, keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist - you might find the perfect thing for very little $$ or even for free.

If you're going for modern, an easy trick is to keep it minimal and focused on function. I don't see art or a mirror fitting that space properly without taking away from the architecture of the home in such a tight space. A rectangular shape will make the arch at the top more pronounced. I would consider finding some cool hooks if you could use the entryway storage or 3-d art that isn't rectangular. Or reconsider adding drywall. Also, the antler chandelier makes the entryway look smaller. Try repositioning so it follows the length of the hall better.

That’s a lot of shoes, how big is your family? What do you use your entry closet for? Any chance you could redo the closet space so the area stays tidy, maybe something like this...

The closet is full of coats, backpacks on the floor. Probably needs a redo. The room next door is a family room and the connecting door goes to the garage. The ironing board is by my sewing table. I could do backpacks in that room somewhere.

We are only a family of 4. Just lots of shoes. Most shoes are kept in bedrooms, but usually we allow 2 pairs per person by the front door.

In Minnesota, everyone removes shoes when entering houses, generally, adults included.

I think you need to de clutter prior to bringing more pieces into the space. Start with the closet. Coats in an entry closet should be changed out seasonally. Same with shoes - no need for snow boots right now. I am not a fan of the shadow box with the keys, and am really scratching my head over the candles and the gnome. I think we need pics of your sewing room, and we can make that a delightful retreat for you that also has storage for overflow from the entry.

I am sorry, but there is no room in the hall for any of these items. I've redesigned many closets and I can tell you, there is room in there to organize these items. It may take making some rules as to how many pairs of shoes, etc.

There also seems to be room in the sewing room.

Please remove the candles and the nome.

Here is a photo of a Cleveland mud room area I redesigned. They have one closet with 4 kids. I removed the curtain and designed an organizational area. This is a much smaller closet area than yours.

I agree with the recommendation to declutter your closet and begin utilizing that space for your day-to-day storage needs. 2 pairs of shoes each x 4 people = a potential for 16 shoes on the floor in this space, which doesn't exactly say "welcome home" at the entry.
