Outside corner on backsplash problem

Have a bow on the corner where a step up bar was removed. The drywall wasnt done correctly...tile guy did what he could but it still bugs me. Any suggestions?

Could you show a photo please?

I would say that the tile person should have pointed out to you, prior to applying the tiles, that this would not look good. Did he do that?

I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess.

Have you considered wallpaper? You can bring in color, as well as a design, if that's your 'schtick'. Just throwing another consideration in the mix. I personally *hate* a backsplast covered in tile or granite from countertop to bottom of cabinets, or even further up. I've gone *about* 3/4 up the wall, with the remained just the neutral color thruout the rest of my home, but only on the interior cabs, so above the stove and sink areas. On the perimeter bank of cabinets, it's just a painted wall, where I had planned to use wallpaper, but haven't done so yet. I also picked up at an auction a painted canvass, which is long and narrow, and thought of using it here. It's a vintage French scene of a girl feeding chickens in a barn, done in dark colors, which is my preference. I just don't want to leave it should I sell. ;)

So we finally decided and the tile went up earlier this week. We are living about 40 minutes away from the house right now, I stopped by the house last evening. We ended up using the suggestion of taping up paper with pictures of the tile - thank you for that suggestion!!! I tried to do photoshop, but I wasn't doing a great job. Seeing it in person helped. We ended up tiling the area above the range and then the 18 inch area between the uppers and counter. In the open shelf area the 18 inches below the lowest shelf are tile, but then above the shelves is paint. Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pictures. It was dusk and the electricity wasn't on. I was also holding my 1 year old at the time.

Whoa. That is a real bummer and eye opener. I'm so sorry. I assume it's too late now, but I imagine it would help to deal with it like exterior wood siding. I've read that wood siding should be painted on all sides so it is sealed to avoid wicking water, like this. If it had been painted on the bottom before install it might have been sealed and resisted wicking. Is it MDF? Maybe plywood wouldn't have swelled? Maybe a pro can weigh in but if it isn't weight bearing and it gets bad, maybe it can be cut and replaced? Maybe the cabinet company has filler board in the right size so the paint finish would be the same? For now, perhaps a bead of clear silicon inside and out along the bottom, smoothed really well so you can't see it maybe?

We talked about it and he did the best he could, not so noticeable from the front.

Hard to see....can you take a photo from further back and point out where the bow is?

I see where you mean. Please take some photos from further away. Also a photo of wall where tile is. Uneven walls can be evened out by the right tile person. Also could have added an edge profile.

Or the drywall should have been replaced. The caulking at the bottom looks sloppy. There is a hole. No?

The drywall there can be mudded, sanded and painted. Or, you could replace the drywall with a bit of finished end panel that matches your cabinets. As for the caulk, that is an easy fix, you just need to ask him to fix it.

Not as noticeable straight on

Just looking for guidance...if there is an easy fix or just live with it.

What should have been done to begin with is to change the drywall piece in that area (or maybe it was just over-mudded. I don't know.

Looks like he did an edge trim, but that is broken up? It should have been a single piece. Another option would be to add and corner edge trim and wrap the tile on the drywall end.

Finally, once that area is painted it will look better. Is your drywall textured? If not, sanding needs to take place prior to painting.

I think it was over-mudded after they put new dry wall up. It was not prepared properly. I will make sure it is sanded before painting. I appreciate all your advice. Thank you!
