need help, new side by side fridge, freezer door doesn't open all
Comments (15)thanks for the input guys! i had pondered the idea of moving that whole wall of cabinets to the right, but realized in doing that the stove would move. i can only move stove a couple of inches to the right (make that 2'), and still be able to fit my waist inside the corner without hip-checking the stove every time. What i really need to be able to completely open the freezer door (past the first point where the door holds it self open) as i can the refrigerator door. That requires 5 3/8'. I have 3/4' i can gain just by tightening up the 12' base cabinet closer to the stove, add another 2' by shifting all the cabinets to the right, but i'm still short 2 1/2'. These cabinets are 14 yrs old, i know i cannot get doors for them anymore, i've tried both lowe's and home desperate, so i'm thinking if i can find a carpenter to make them 9', and move everything down to the right, i might be able to hit it! I cannot modify the opening as the last poster was correct, it's a 8' tall patio door. Find a pic of how far (little actually) the door opens (while resting on the glass of the patio door) Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreOld home; new front door; need storm door ideas
Comments (4)I am thankful for any and all suggestions! I appreciate all views. The new door is an insulated steel door by Waudena, out of Wisconsin. I do open the casements windows on either side of the front window, but if the door is open I can see my Purple Martin colony and part of the garden from the kitchen. I live in North Dakota with -20 to -40 temps common in the winter, howling winds, banking snow, and all sorts of lovely weather. A storm door is a necessary evil. Still, in the brief but bright summer, I'd love to have a "view."...See Morecutting down a nice, new door to fit a too small opening
Comments (10)Four options: Trim the hinge side but as others have mentioned you'll probably run out of solid wood to attach the hinges. The door won't look very good either. Trim both sides. You still still probably have an issue with the hinges and will need to fill in where the door was bored for the lockset. Enlarge the rough opening, which is going to be a lot of work. Order a door in the correct size. If you trim the door you're going to need a circular saw, fine tooth blade, and some kind of straight edge ($25 if you make one, $100+ if you buy one). You'll also need a couple of hole saws - one to cut the plug, one to cut the new hole - plus a spade bit to drill for the latch, chisels or template/router for the hinges. If you do trim, be careful with the piece you cut off the hinge side. Use that to lay out for the new hinge mortises rather than trying to measure. If you do go this route, I would strongly suggest practicing on one of the old doors first! Personally I would just order a new door and be done with it. Sell the old one or donate it....See MoreNew pocket door not fully opening
Comments (45)Hi Catbuilder -- definitely not against measuring the pocket at all! But the space between the door and its pocket is wayyyyy too small to get a tape measurer in. There is not even 1mm to spare. A yardstick or dowel would definitely not fit. I'm at work now, but I'm wondering if the way to do this is actually to measure at the bottom? Like on the tracks? Apologies if this is what was being suggested by you and others all along, but it only now occurred to me. I'll see if it can be done, maybe not tonight since it'll be dark when I get home (no electricity in that area yet) but tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's support and patience!...See MoreHolly H
