Our daughters talent is gardening and canning

Do not know where she gets it from. I never canned a thing in my life. Tried a garden a couple of years and just not worth the time or energy for me. I hate dirt LOL I have a black thumb. Anyway.... DD makes the best canned veggies.

Comments (7)Oh.. i didn't know they would get big. My mom has a tub a bit bigger than mine and she actually had a few survive last winter.. i do not know how. We have 4 tanks in the house for fish.. one is our recovery tank, although we rarely use it. I was going to put them in that for the winter. The lady at the fish store told me they stayed litte! Thanks for telling me otherwise. How would 2 shabunkins do in there? Or maybe just 3 little comets.. and i'll give the rest to someone else. Also.. how do i winterize the plants? We should be all done tomorrow with everything (hubby has the rest of the week off from work). I'm so excited! Oh, the "crooked house".. my daughters birthday is May 28, so that was me, my hubby and my father's weekend project. We did it in 2 days from scratch. Comments (3)Hi there! Laguna Hills, I believe, is zone 10, maybe 9. At any rate, it should be pretty much like where I live (I'm up north on the coast outside San Francisco, and Laguna Hills is down south, if I remember correctly). As much stuff as I've collected and grown, believe it or not, I'm a container gardener also, because we live in a townhouse and only have a cement slab patio to work with. You can check out my slideshow for more ideas of what she can plant, but my favorites have been: poppies morning glories clematis anigozanthos (kangaroo paw) passionflower violets brugmansia (yes! I have (gasp) 30, but of course, they're all from recent cuttings) ferns amaryllis can stay outside yearround pink saucer magnolias are stunning, though mine died : ( all manner of bulbs (though we have to treat tulips as annuals, usually-- just doesn't get cold enough) clerodendrum bungeii (best in a pot anyway--it's very invasive, but gorgeous) wisteria (I have a 7 gallon-ish sized pot with wisteria) basically, anything! I even have a container water garden. You'd be surprised at what you can grow in a container. When you add the extra luck of being in California, those possiblities are basically limitless. Comments (7)My daughter won't eat the tomatoes, but she loves to walk around with her little "garden basket" and pick the red ones! Now that we finally figured out how to keep the birds out, she like "hunting" for the little ripe strawberries, too! For flowers--We have been putting in moss rose and it's taking off like crazy! I was just trying for a little color on a bald spot in our yard, but they are spreading and have beautiful flowers! My garden was crazy this year--my first one, and I didn't really expect anything to do well, so I didn't spend much time planning... Comments (2)That is VERY cool-- and you must be so proud of her. I think gardening helps kids learn to nurture, to examine the things around them and it's a neat hobby too. If they aren't interested yet, just hang in there and let them be around you when you garden. Plant something in a pot they've decorated and let them watch it grow......See More
