Beadboard Backing with Shaker Built-in Shelves?
Comments (14)i think beadboard a little too common/nantucket/whatever for your desire, and i agree that a custom milled back would be more in keeping with your vision. look for some proportions in the room you can re-use on the back of the unit, (maybe the floor?) and it will probably give you the effect you're seeking. and hey macv, is there another forum you could suggest? i love this one, but could use another as i do my research. my home aspires to sophistication, so far i think we come close, we've got a contemporary and unique farmhouse--excellent view forces some contemporary window walls for instance...but need to look at the details more closely. thanks--and op, sorry to hijack....See MoreBuilt in alternative? or built in shelves?
Comments (15)Hi Cathy -- I get why you're overwhelmed by them...I didn't even notice the TV at first! Once you get them to be something other than black (brown?) holes it will all feel more natural. Definitely a room that looks great for hanging out for conversation or TV! Lots of great ideas above. My one suggestion -- since there'll be a lot going on in that area -- is to create a strong line across the space at the height of your mantel to keep the eye from jumping around a lot. I know you don't have windows above but these pics show what I mean: Whether you do all shelves, all cabs, or cabs or drawers below/shelves above [the last is my vote] depends on your budget and/or preferences. And don't forget you could do sliding (bypass) doors to save space vs doors that open out. Good luck...hope you'll show us the after!...See MoreKeep all white or add color to exterior of 1850's house?
Comments (32)We're also located in Iowa and according to our abstract, the lot was first purchased in 1850, but no details as to when the house was actually built. The floor plan definitely matches up to a foursquare. As someone posted earlier, the Library of Congress maps have actually been super helpful. I had no idea there was such a thing :D According to thothose records, the porch/overhang roof is not an addition. Our kitchen in the back is however. It does show that the house across the street from us, the true Greek revival was built before ours. So maybe it is just a foursquare with that added style .....you know, to keep up with the Jones' haha. And I completely agree about the front door. It's awful. It doesn't even seem to properly fit what's been trimmed out. Our single car garage was damaged and is going to need to come down. We've decided to remove it completely and fence in that area for some very much needed yard space. So the brown picket fence will be coming down and a 6ft privacy fence will be going up. I'm trying to convince my husband of going with a white vynl fence to help go with the house....See MoreBuilt ins. should I keep them or remove them?
Comments (18)Thank you for all the suggestions. Do not be sorry for saying your opinion, I have understood that everyone has different choice and likes. So I will not mind. We do not have any book collections. So I am not sure what I will be storing in them. The first photo was taken when the house was staged. To make it look that I need to but those huge books that we do not read. :). Jokes apart we will using the space as secondary TV room\entertainment area for big gathering. We already have another primary family room. I like low maintenance, with so many shelves I need to do regular dusting which I am not up for. We are painting all the windows and trims and base boars white in the room. I do not like the wood color. It make the room dark. Here are the additional photos of that room. These photos are from listing so the room looks brighter, but believe it does look this bright in reality. To explain my choice, I know adding a window seat that current height would be too high. So I wanted to reduce the height and get it to 20 inches. We may have to change the window in the future as these are really old. When we do that we can get bigger window that will match the window seat height. I hope that makes sense....See Morelbooras54
