When it comes to hanging art, keep in mind those Velcro Command Strips. I use them to hang almost everything and they don't damage the walls. They hold a surprising amount of weight. That metal scrollwork would probably take one nail, but most artwork, unless the frames are really heavy, can be hung with the command strips. I'm not so sure the metal piece is "farmhouse." Rustic, probably. When I think farmhouse, though, I don't think of that type of piece. I think you can do better, but if you really LOVE it, then go for it! I do like the upholstered ottoman but I like yayagal's coffee table suggestion even better! It will definitely help set the farmhouse tone you want.

Many good suggestions above, just want to add that a tall plant in the empty corner by the window would be great. I'm afraid that the patterned chair ties you into a certain rather bland color scheme. Can you move it to another room? If yes, I would then find a quite large and colorful rug to wake up all the beige and gray blandness. An Oriental rug or transitional Oriental in lively colors would do this room a world of good. Try rugsUSA and esale.rugs for ideas. When you've found a rug, choose your pillows based on the colors in the rug. With that and a much longer TV console your room is going to look smashing and alive. For curtains I would choose a neutral off-white or light beige color with a self pattern or plain heavier material. They'll provide softness without influencing your color scheme or calling too much attention to themselves. Frankly, family pictures in the living room just don't make for good decor, unless they're large, black and white and in simple frames. Look on e-bay for original art and try to find something that speaks to you. There may be types of art that do touch your soul which you haven't investigated before. Art, books and plants make a home come alive. Please don't put towers in the room for pictures or anything else. They are a trend that is over with although you'll still find them because most places that sell furniture are five to ten years behind. Generally speaking trends are good things to stay away from. You want a classic look in your basic furniture, livened up by items that you love to give your rooms the stamp of your personality. I have to say that your coffee table is a bit lacking in personality and good looks. Would you like to try a glass coffee table instead? Perhaps a more interesting and colorful lamp would also be a consideration for you.

Don't move the credenza then. Get an area rug, center one group of seating around fireplace and conversation and then maybe get a tea cart or something and put a small chair or two around that near the doors/windows to the outside. You can sit and sip your tea and watch the birdies outside there in the winter! When the weather gets nice you can carry the chairs out to the deck to sit in the sun! Then roll the cart out there with some cocktails later in the day!

Why so GA? I thought I hated fake fireplaces, but if I was going to have one, I would sure want it to serve the function of giving off heat . . . if I needed that. I live in the frozen north country. Otherwise, it is just something to dust to me. I also realized that if you live in a dark grey area of the country (I do), there is nothing wrong with getting artistic pieces that evoke the light and warmth of a fire. So much the better if you can chose sometimes to just have the light. My dad has one of those colored sparkly heaters in his basement, and at first I thought, "How gauche!" but when I changed my perspective and thought of it as a piece of art that not only pleases the eye but serves a function, I changed my mind. I don't much care for the look of a TV over the fireplace, and since I use my fireplace daily, I don't like thinking about how the heat would affect my electronics, but having a TV over the fireplace is pretty much ubiquitous nowdays, particularly in warmer climates. My comment was only to consider that I had a fake fireplace which had a SINGULAR purpose of being a decorative feature, and it took up way too much wall space to be practical for me, it was nothing more than something that was a pain to dust, and made me want the warmth of a real fireplace. It was too high to mount a TV over so mine was on a shelving unit to the side, but my TV was smaller than the huge ones popular today. When I bought the house it was a huge charm feature for me, but that faded very fast. Fast forward, my landlady once loaned me these big square space heaters to help with the heat in my un-insulated apartment. They had one function, to heat the room and were otherwise ugly black blobs. Here's a photo of my fake fireplace. A lovely white elephant. I did not think so when I bought the place. Of course YMMV, just giving you the perspective of someone who lived in a tiny house with a fake fireplace for 12 years.
