English ivy turning brown

Just got this sad looking little guy from Lowes. Does anyone know what could cause this? I’m not sure if it’s a fungus, overwatering, or the heat. If it’s a fungus, should I keep this away from my other plants?

Most probably spider mites (I can see some telltale speckling). If it doesn't already have them now, it's just a matter of time until it does!

could be.. i surely cant see much of anything in this pic.. and im not saying its wrong ...

but it also looks like it might have been left out in a parking lot in severe heat for a day or so ... sunburnt ....

and that is something that can brown leaves in a matter of hours or days ...

as compared to some bug infestation.. that would have had to have been there for months to build the requisite population for such damage ...

I had English ivy (Hedera helix) at my previous house. We regularly took it out by the multiple cubic yards, too. It is VERY invasive, propagating from roots, branches, and/or leaves. I never put it into my compost at that house, and I don't put it into the compost at this house. Although your climate is much colder and may knock the ivy back during the winter, a compost pile will be much warmer than the ambient winter temps, and the ivy will LOVE being in the compost. Such a nice growing medium, you know.... I would recommend that you keep sending it to the town composting facility, where temps are probably high enough to kill even ivy's wish to propagate. in el cerrito

The primary pest of English Ivy houseplants is the dreaded spider mite. Many people refuse to bring these plants into the home for that very reason! ME, for example, lol. The easiest way to get rid of spider mites on this plant is to fling it as far away from your house as you can and never get another one. Fire does a good job, too. You could try putting your plants in a blender and giving them a whirl, but I expect that the mites would come back. Seriously, you can begin an assortment of regular treatments as soon as you walk in the door with your next one. This could include spraying with an alcohol and water solution, insecticidal soap, neem oil, etc. Be sure to concentrate your efforts on the under side of all of the leaves, as this is where mites tend to congregate.

That leaf looks to me as if it might have spider mites. The little brown stipples near the petiole look ominous. You can google multiple remedies but one thing which would help would be to put the plants outside for a few months where wind rain and humidity will help deter the mites. Basically ivy is a bone hardy plant, not a tropical, and indoors it is prey to mites.

Hello! I've noticed the same browning/dying of my english ivy that is growing up a large oak tree in my yard. I have a large ant colony in that bed that I've never been able to eradicate and I was wondering if they could be killing it. It's about 3 years old and looked great until now. Could it be getting too much sun just because the leaves aren't out yet? It's been in the 60's and 70's here already, but this hasn't ever happened before! And for those who worry so...I keep it clipped well back, never let it get big enough to flower and burn the clippings so they don't spread.

They do best outdoors where they can become invasive given enough time and the right conditions.

Here was my last one that I tried keeping indoors and finally left it outside in the original pot inside a much larger pot. It did a lot better here than indoors for winter.

Some start reverting though.

Dug up this hosta last year and along came some ivy

Not sure who will win here - the ivy or the Asian Jasmine.

One I put out 3 years ago is getting a nice spread.

They become addictive though.

Don't know what is happening to the middle shoot.

two different types from a friend plus the hardy begonias (this was in April). All those plants are in an aluminum pan and been sitting there for 3 years now.

Same pan July 1st.

Anyway, move your pot outdoors, trim off the dead and damaged leaves and keep it watered as needed. You will get lots of growth.

Not with spider mites!! Chances are very good the plant came with these tiny (microscopic) creatures already present and the damage they can do is extremely rapid as well.
