Help with Living/Eating arrangement

Hey everyone,

We just moved into a new apartment and we're having trouble figuring out how to layout the place with a dining table in mind. We have plenty of space but can't find the right location for a table. I've attached a layout(with and without some of the furniture and some photos. Everything but the eames chair and media console is our temporary post-move/covid setup. We're planning on getting a new couch, dining table and chairs. My thought is we put a small drop leaf table where the temporary folding table desk setup is to keep the flow between the kitchen and living room open. My GF thinks we should just keep a table where the bar top is now (just not a bar height). Any other suggestions on how to handle a space to eat with this? Thanks

Kitchen is through the top of floor plan, sorry here is a better photo showing the kitchen

One idea might be to add a very short wall on the left as you enter the living room so the opening to the living room is the same width as the entry ... and, by doing that you could put wall to wall built ins on that end of the living area, with or without a tv, and still create two separate sitting areas. I don't understand the "bar" against the solid wall behind the pantry and refrigerator. If you changed the pantry to a "butler's pantry" with a pass thru window, that would have made more sense. Is your "bar" a cabinet something built in? Have you considered either closing or narrowing the door between dining and living room and/or creating your pass thru bar there with your piano in the adjoining corner adjacent to the fireplace near the dining room wall? https://www.decorpad.com/search/butler-pantry-pass-through

And, put the bookshelf in the room too. That looks much better. Hopefully it works better for you and your family too. congratulations! I would remove the mantle and hang the TV above the fireplace. Center a large area rug on TV/Fireplace. a credenza under that pass through, sofa moved much further forward. I would think of the Right side coming out of the kitchen as the dining space... as it is on the way to the patio. Get the largest table you can fit there, if you need for 4 go with 6. First, take the art of the wall. It is too small yet it is making you think sectional should be on the solid wall. Not so. Try moving the U sectional to the right, so the right facing chaise is under the front window. The corner windows will be highlighted. Don't put the sectional so tight to the wall. Get an area rug and sized as this photo. This effect: Little table goes to the left of front door. On the remaining solid wall, place the larger table, a lamp, and the art over it.

Why do you need the media console?

Can't you mount the TV on the wall?

Or if the TV cannot be mounted directly on the wall, what about a shelf on the wall for the TV, or a boxlike shelf on the wall?

That media console is a big space hog with not much storage.

As it stands, you have no place for books in there.

Do you need/want book storage?

I would try to find some sort of wall unit in which you could put the TV as well and that would do double duty as book storage and to hold the TV.

In fact it would do quadruple duty, because you could have some closed storage in there for office supplies such as staples, tape, that sort of thing and you could also have a desk in there as well of any size you like, or even a drop leaf desk. That could be on either long wall, with the couch on the other.

For a table, I would get a wooden folding table with four chairs and you can leave it up in the two person configuration or keep it tucked away until you have guests. It has wheels, it is very easy to set up and move around and you can tuck it in a closet or under your bed

And if you don't want it up for just the two of you, you can get a lift-top coffee table that has a hinge that elevates it so you can eat on it.

There are also large lift-top coffee tables that become dining tables, but those are quite pricey.

Media console is actually completely full. Has electronics and video game consoles in it. We ordered some book shelves recently to put on the wall where the book spine is currently. We will eventually mount the TV on the wall once the layout is finalized and I have a center speaker that will go on the console where the TV is

Well, I'd probably figure out how to move the tv closer to the window wall and turn the sofa so it faces the windows, with the desk behind the sofa like a sofa table, Eames in the opposite corner from where it is now, bar dispatched and a table and chairs where the couch is now. But that might involve a smaller tv and/or angling it in one of the corners, neither ideal.
